Fussy & Fighting Sleep

The first week home (week 0-1) our LO was really predictable with a sort of routine; wake, diaper change, feed, immediately falls asleep & repeat. We just hit the second week mark & this entire week (week 1-2) he fights all of his naps (which are typically max 1hr) & at night time only sleeps most nights an hour at a time (some nights more). when he wakes we still change & feed but then he fights going to sleep even if we play with him a little while. He then ends up so overtired & fussy that he doesn't eat well (latches then unlatches then gets frustrates & cries hard; pumping & using a bottle doesn't seem to help) he also doesn't wake rested the rest of day from any of the naps he does take. I can only find solid sleep advice for 3+ months; Any advice out there? Swaddling doesn't seem to make any impact either :(

Re: Fussy & Fighting Sleep

  • I wouldn't change him overnight unless there's poop, because it wakes them up more, nor would I play with him overnight. It's all about minimum stimulation overnight in our house, so he learns nights vs days.

  • When my girl is fighting sleep I put her against my chest, light blanket on her back, and rub or pat her back and bottom while singing to her. Sometimes I sing soft kitty and sometimes I make up songs about how tired I am and how tired I know she is. I also have a boba wrap and when I put her in that she's asleep in less than 5 minutes. Usually stays asleep in that for 2+ hours. Both ways I use a pacifier too.
  • I agree with the previous poster. Any time I wear my son (boba wrap, ring sling, or ergo) he relaxes and passes out within minutes. Then I can transfer him. Good luck!
  • The 5 S's from Happiest Baby on the Block are also working for me for the most part. My LO is not a bit fan of a pacifier, so we skip the soother. But trust and believe I do a lot of shhhhhhhhhhhhh, so much that my mouth is dry lol

White noise does seem to help us most of the time. I downloaded an app on my phone that has all kinds of white noise options. My LO likes either rain sounds or the static - y sound, which is kinds like the "shhhh" sound. I actually downloaded it for myself before she was born because it helps me sleep. I also have a white noise machine for her nursery for when she starts sleeping jn her crib. She's still in her bassinet for now.

Good luck! I hope you find something that works for you!!
  • There's an app called the Babyshusher and it really works it takes the place of you "shhhhing" for hours on end and it does work to calm my LO
  • @nemRN did you spell the name of the app correctly? I looked for it and couldn't find it
  • I have this issue in the evening. I find that taking Felix outside really helps. Sometimes it calms him instantly. I also find that sometimes a bath. I shower and then dh brings him in and we chill for a while.
  • Thanks everyone! The 5 S trick has worked for the last 3 naps so far today :) he's fallen asleep more soundly & longer :D
  • @ecloho just type in "Babyshusher" all one word
  • Your LO could be going through a growth spurt. Babies usually do at the 2/3 week mark which can make them unsettling. They are fussy and clingy. There tired but fight it. There not sure what they want to do.
  • LO was doing something similar (3weeks old). I was trying to rock hi and everything. One night was so bad that I fell asleep with him lying in our bed and my pinky in his mouth. Nothing else was working! That was abt 2 days ago. Tonight...little man is eating, getting a diaper change and I just laid him back in his pack and play next to the bed and OMG if he didn't just soothe himself back to sleep! He did this at the last waking as well (3 hrs ago)!!! There is hope!
