Commence all the fetal home doppler posts/questions/freak outs!

I just got mine and was able to pick up the heartbeat at 10wks 1 day.  whoo hoo

I had one with my last pregnancy and my husband could find it at 9 weeks.  I couldn't until I was a little further along.

I know I'm not the only crazy on here who has/is getting a doppler.

I gave mine away (same model as yours) so had to buy another one.  I just couldn't resist doing it again.

I would have been a wreck without it and now being in our first pregnancy since our miscarriage a few months back I will need it yet again for my sanity.

Try not to worry. That's still really early to be picking up the heartbeat.

  • I bought a sonoline B with DS and will be using it again. I couldn't find the heartbeat with him until 13 weeks but could find it every time after that. I will be using again but have to get it back from a friend.

  • I have one from previous pregnancies and I busted it out way before I'll even admit ;)  However I did find the heartbeat last weekend, after trying a few times with no success.  It's still very difficult to find, takes me 4-5 mins and even then I rarely get to hear it very long.  I do remind myself that it's very early and not being able to find it sometimes is totally normal and it doesn't really freak me out.  Just nice to hear it once in a while :)

  • Thanks, I hope it's ok. Maybe baby was just in a really good position that day! Fingers crossed. 1 week 3 days until my ultra sound x
  • I used one with my twins and loved it. I'll bust it out again around 10 weeks.

Try coughing hard...it will move the baby a little bit and you may be able to find it.  That's what the doctor had me do during my visit yesterday.  At first, she couldn't find anything and had me cough hard, then all of a sudden, the HB was loud and clear!

This is so good to know. I've heard many tricks, but this is new.

Thanks I will defiantly try this tonight!!
  • I started looking for one online yesterday but then I stopped myself because I would so freaked out if I couldn't find the HB. Also, I'm wondering how well it will work this early on with this post-honeymoon gut I've got going.

I would wait a little longer to try it so you don't freak yourself out. Probably close to 12 weeks? When you do look you need to look right above your hair line so if you have a little pouch like me it won't get in the way. :) I couldn't find DS's until 13 weeks.

  • I got a sonoline b last week, and after 3 days of trying to find a heartbeat and failing I was a worried mess. Went in for an ultrasound with a private tech on monday because I had worried myself sick and she advised me against trying again till around 12 weeks (I'm 9 weeks 5 days now). She said some women can find it earlier, but most won't until around 12 weeks and that causes so much unnecessary stress. I'm taking her advice!
  • Any advice for FTM?? I've thought about this, but never really put too much thought into it until this thread...and now I'm curious! Is getting one worth it? Are there better ones out there that I should look at? Where's a good place to start looking? Thanks everyone!

It's really personal preference. I was a nervous wreck with my first and it gave me peace of mind BUT if I would have ever not found the heartbeat, I would have been a mess. Luckily that never happened. I have the sonoline b and love it. It was worth the money to get a better quality Doppler.

ETA: I ordered mine off amazon.

I've never had one for any of my pregnancies (this is my 6th pregnancy). After my last 2 losses I still haven't decided if I will get one or not.

It really depends on what type of person you are. If you're the type that will be ok with not finding the hb from time to time (just try again in a few days) and it will be for fun, then by all means do it. I love listening to the hb when I do find it. I have a sonoline B from Amazon.

If you're going to freak out and worry that something is wrong every time you have trouble finding the hb, then definitely steer clear.

Like others have said it is a preference. I thought about it with my first, but we didn't have much money to spend on extras at the time so the decision was made for me. This time I'm still not getting one because... 1) the self-induced panic others have meantioned due to user error. 2) I've never heard of a doppler saving babies, basically you just find out faster if smothing awful happened (correct me if I'm wrong). 3) Soon enough we'll be able to feel the baby move to know everything is ok, so you would only need the Doppler for a few months and I hate buying things that are only good for a few months. But I'm also a what happens, happens type of person and I try not to worry about things out of my control.

  • My cousin gave me hers last pregnancy, but I never had the chance to use it because my 12wk was the next day and they discovered that I had a MMC, so had I used it I wouldn't have been able to find anything, I'm glad I didn't find that out on my own.  If I get out of the first trimester this time I may use it at that point when it shouldn't be too difficult to pick up.

  • I got one. I have an SCH and I thought that if I could hear the heartbeat occasionally I would worry less. Then I used it, found the heartbeat, was relieved and then panicked that maybe I shouldn't use it because I don't know if I could mess anything up with it. I guess nothing keeps me from worrying.
  • I got one purely because of my mmc in April - i found the heartbeat today at 10+3 and it's really helped me especially because I've been having chronic back pain. Finding it today has really helped me to not panic but I think if you're a worrier and every time you can't find it or something then I wouldn't bother getting one - I like it as well because you don't get your scan until 12wks in UK so it's a nice reassurance and you and your partner can bond over baby

So I just got my sonoline b in today And I couldn't hear anything. I'm 11w5d. I wasn't real sure where the best place to go was below hair line. Above? Any suggestions? Ready to hear this heart beat again and let dd hear it too!
  • Just try again in a few hours or few days. I found it at 10w 3 days (this is my third). Yesterday I tried again at 11w 2days and couldn't find it. I tried again a few hours later and found it easily. So it doesn't mean anything if you can find it!

Both times I found it pretty low, like right at my underwear line, and had to push it pretty firmly. Try tilting it around at different angles as well.

  • I did find the swooshing sound just now like right around my hip bone to the right after pressing more firmly than before. But never found the heart beat sound.. I'll probably try tomorrow again. I have appt Thursday So I'll look to see where dr goes ;) thanks!!
  • My doc recommends first thing in the morning when you really have to pee...
  • Been able to pick it up since 8+1. Tried a few times and have picked it up each time in less than three minutes. But this is baby 5 and I have used them on clients for years.
  • They say to go straight from your naval down and mine was just above my pubic bone if not pretty much on it; just to the right of naval. I had to angle the Doppler a little and don't worry if can't find it I found mine and then couldn't again the other day - cough as well it moves the positioning like someone else mentioned and it worked for me.
  • Thanks! I will try the coughing thing too!
  • For those who don't always find a heartbeat...my doctors (more then just one) have not been able to find a heartbeat with a Doppler at any appontment (last appointment was 16 weeks) as a result I have had an US at every appointment. I haven't been worried anytime as I have been so sick and it goes away pretty quick if not pregnant but don't worry at home if you (a non professional) can't find one. Clearly if you have reason to worry I understand but my professionals couldn't find it yet.
