Spotting?

anyone have spotting recently? I've had it since Wednesday off and on. Saw ob on Wednesday who did an internal exam and a quick bedside ultrasound and said everything is fine and I may have spotting right after the exam. Now it's Saturday. Depending on who I've gotten on yet nurses line I've heard it's fine to I need to go to the hospital to get it checked out. The nurse yesterday said spotting is fine as long as it's mixed with mucus whereas today they said go to the hospital. It's been mixed with mucus and reddish to brownish (sorry if tmi). Anyways just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience recently and what the urgency and treatment (if any) was. Low level period like discomfort in the lower pelvic area off and on.

Re: Spotting?

  • Any sort of cramping with spotting should be checked out, especially if someone on your nurses line said to. I know it is a pain to have to head to the ER on the weekend but I would always rather be safe than sorry.

  • At this point in the game I say all bleeding deserves to be checked out. Especially since you were advised to.

If you're not there already I suggest you head straight to labor and delivery at the hospital. Bleeding from an internal exam should have cleared up by now. Not to scare you or anything but the last time I had period like pain on and off accompanied by bleeding I was in preterm labor with my son at 31 weeks. My bleeding started a couple of days after a routine office visit without an internal exam. Of course there are a lot of other reasons that you could be experiencing those symptoms but there is no way to know for sure what it is until you are examined by a medical professional. We haven't yet reached viability and I agree with pp that any type of bleeding should be checked out from this point on.

Good luck and keep us updated.

I had spotting almost every day up until 13 weeks, and then once again a couple weeks ago. It was light and ranged all sorts of colours. I actually wouldn't go to emergency, because there's nothing they can really do anyway if it is the worst case, but I would schedule an appointment just to get checked out. But if it's just light, now and then, I really wouldn't start to worry yet.
  • I just want to tell you that it can be completely normal. I've had it with both pregnancies. My first pregnancy resulted in a healthy 8.5 lb baby boy. My doctor tells me that if I come in to get checked and everything is fine, that I should call or come in if symptoms worsen.
  • I agree with a PO my midwife told me at this point in my pregnancy bleeding is a no no and should be called if spotting if it's bad like straight blood go to the hospital no if ands or buts about it. Which kind of made me happy in a sense since I see on hear a lot of ob's tell mamas to call the nurse. Know that they want me to go straight to the ER gives me a sense that they care because of urgency about the situation.

  • I had spotting a few weeks ago around 17 weeks. I freaked out even though it was only little bit and it brown. My dr did a quick u/s and said that my placenta is low lying and to abstain from sex until
The anatomy scan to see if it moved. Maybe you could ask how the placenta looks?
  • As a nurse who has multiple miscarriages herself. I would advise making an appointment with your OB ASAP. Cramping with the bleeding is concerning for both placental and fetal abnormalities. Any bleeding from the exam should have cleared up by now. It might be all just fine too, but it's worth your peace of mind to get it checked out.
  • Thanks ladies for all the advice. Got checked with visit and ultrasound and everything is ok! Just trying to take it easier now!
  • Did your doctor ever give you an official reason for why you were spotting?
I started spotting this morning similar to yours and had a cervical exam and u/s to check everything. It's mostly gone with a teeny bit here and there but it's "old" blood he says. He also said it may have been marginal sinus bleeding? Google doesn't give much info as to what that is and how severe it can be. For now I'm busy resting with a two year old.
