Did you ask for a membrane strip?

I've searched the boards and couldn't find an answer-Next appt is Monday I'll be 39+2 I wasn't dilated at 36 weeks (50 effaced) and Havnt been checked since...my docs appts are in and out which I know is normal-but I'm curious about and would like to have a sweep I'm super anxious about going over due my little nephew has major leg surgery the 24th and they have 2
Other kids that need caring for while they are at hospital coincidentally we moved to same city his surgery is in so I am the only other caregiver besides my husband who works full time --so ill
Get to my question should I ask for a sweep on Monday? How did you bring it up is it silly to ask for one at 39 weeks- is it to early ? Sorry this is so long...Ftm

Re: Did you ask for a membrane strip?

  • I asked for one at my 40 week appointment because there wasn't any progress in dilation. However, a doctor won't do it if you are GBS +. It's just unsafe. But yes I did bring it up to my doc.

  • I am GBs+ and my dr offered a sweep @ my last appt 39 weeks I declined and said maybe next week she said or you can wait til 41 weeks. My dr really laid back and knows I'd rather do everything natural. So I guess its really depends on your dr and what you want.

So odd because my doc declined my request because of GBS + solely. I guess every doc is different?
  • Good info I am in fact GB positive
  • My doc won't do one till 40w. I go on Thursday when I am 39w 6d. I am seriously considering taking her up on the offer then.

I was GBS+ last pregnancy and had a sweep. I am GBS+ again this pregnancy and have had 2 done already. If you want one, I don't see the harm in asking. Just don't get your hopes up that it will do anything.
  • My doctor won't do it unless you're dilated
  • I'm gbs+ and got the sweep. So it seems it's the doctors call. I asked and she said it was on the menu for the day anyway.
  • I got it done yesterday at 39+3 and it did nothing at all. I didn't have any contractions what so ever. I'm not really sure it actually does much. I think that the baby comes when ready and you can't do too much to rush it, but it certainly doesn't hurt to get the sweep!
  • My last app I was 39w+2d, I never asked for one but she offered to do one and I said yes. I wasn't dilated or anything and as far as I know it didnt do anything, except I've started losing bits of my mucus plug. Will probably ask for one at my 40w app on Wednesday
  • You really need to be 2cm dilated in order for it to work. I had my membranes stripped at 39 weeks (1cm) and it wasn't successful. At 40 weeks she tried again when I was 3cm and there was a little "pop" of separation. Doc predicted I would go into labor within 48 hours... 12 hours later I was in L&D.
  • My doc would have done it even though I was GBS+ but since i was only at a 1 he didn't.

They really can't do one unless you are dilated. They have to be able to get in to sweep and if you are not dilated they can't get in there.

  • Does it hurt when they do the sweep? My dr checked me last appt and I found that to be a bit painful.
  • The sweep is more uncomfortable than an exam yes
  • I am definately going to be asking for a sweep at my appointment tomorrow. I've been in early labour for a week and I'm struggling with the daily pain. It got so bad on Friday night that I went to the birth unit when they were 3 minutes apart to then be sent home as only 1cm. Then as usual the contractions eased right off again. I'm getting so disheartened that I'm going to be left with the pains every day and go overdue. I'm happy that she's obviously a happy little girly and quite comfy in there but I'm so exhausted from this that I'm worried I won't have the energy to push her out and look after her when she does show up. Sorry about the vent.
  • My mom is coming from out of state on Tuesday and I have an appt Tuesday morning and I am going to ask for a sweep (39w2d) I am only 1cm for the last 4 weeks... But I went from 40% effaced to 70% effaced in two days, so I am hoping that this sweep helps, but being 1cm I don't have my hopes high lol
  • I had my membranes swept at 38 weeks when I was 3 cm and 90% effaced. And again at 39 weeks when I was 3 cm and 100% effaced. Still preggers and will be 40 weeks tomorrow!
  • Just got back was told "we let nature run its course" ughhh next week he'll check the dialation and discuss induction kind of disappointed
  • some docs will do whatever you ask and some docs will tell you to chill out and let it come naturally. While i get your NEED for speeding up the process. My doc did one with my first 3 days past my due date and it still took 7 more for him to come out. Its no more of a guarantee than being dilated to a certain degree of effaced.
  • I will be requesting one tomorrow. I will be 38 weeks and am getting induced on Thursday due to being high risk. But I am already at least 2.5 centimeters dialated and 60% effaced and having contractions daily so I am hoping it will give me the boost I need to go into labor naturally before being induced.

  • I had mine done at my 40 week appointment and my water broke 2 days later :) my doctor wanted to wait until 40 to do it :)
  • I was 2 cm dilated at 38+4 and my doc offered to stretch my cervix. He knew I was having a lot of pain and was comfortable if things moved along. So I said yes please! You could always just ask if he has any way to speed things up and see what he says. If he doesn't bring it up, then ask about it. Worst case is he says no.
