Anything you can't eat bc you're Bfing

im pretty sure I can't eat broccoli anymore. It seems the day after I eat broccoli LO is more fussy than normal. I don't think he's gassy, he's just more clingy and wants to be held more and nurse more than usual. DH thinks it's definitely the bro cocky and it gives him gas, I'm sad because I've been eating veggies like crazy and now I have to cut out the broccoli!

  • Broccoli is a huge one! It causes gas. Also, be careful of other leafy greens.
  • With DD1 I could not eat any tomato products :(. Sooooo sad. With DD2, I haven't noticed anything yet!
  • I notice with leafy greens! I ate a kale salad two days in a row and poor baby was super fussy & gassy. Unfortunately, I've had to take it easy on salads.
  • I've noticed the broccoli causing gas. I have also noticed cabbage causing problems for my little guy. I'm also trying to watch how much dairy I eat. I love yogurt, but have stopped eating it because of some tummy issues baby was having.
  • I've also heard leafy greens but luckily that isn't one I've had to eliminate. I've cut out dairy, gluten, and beans (except chick peas). Black beans habe been the worst offender. Talk about a pain in the ass. No chocolate, ice cream, baked goods, or beer, to name a few. At least I still have coffee and liquor.
  • Curry made for one unhappy chickie.

I can't do the refried beans if we eat Mexican. I just get double rice. The beans piss the babe off royally.
  • Dairy for me! I'm struggling with the change because dairy was always my go to snack - currently trying all the alternatives. It's just not the same :(
  • LO has had crazy gas pains for the last few days. I think I've finally traced it to Crystal Light. Or coconut milk ice cream. So hard to pinpoint.
  • I cut out Greek yogurt, not sure if it was causing her to be gassy but she's been better since eliminating it. I've also stopped eating salads, so sad!
  • It's so hard to know because I don't eat very consistently. The only time I've really noticed a reaction from baby is a day I ate tons of berries. I still eat them, but in moderation.

I've recently cut this out too. It made me sad but LO is so gassy & struggles during poops, so I thought I'd give it a try. I did buy coconut yogurt yesterday because I love yogurt. It's not the same, but it's also pretty good.
  • I've had to cut out dairy and I absolutely love dairy!! It's so hard. I've notice bro cocky too and anytime I have to grab fast food, she screams at me for it!! Good way to eat healthy except have to give up the yummy green veggies, broccoli, Brussel sprouts and I'm staying away from cauliflower too!
  • When I was dairy free last time I ate a ton of those skinny pretzel sticks dipped in hummus. It was a good substitute for the rich, creamy saltiness of cheese.
  • I've had to cut out dairy (occasionally still eat chocolate but only small amounts and I try to eat dark choc if possible.) I have to limit caffeine too because bedtime is terrible with too much. I also don't drink it after 2:00. The dairy is hard to give up! Cheese and crackers or Greek yogurt with granola were some favorite snacks and so easy to make! But I love the LO more than yogurt and cheese!
  • Anything acidic makes DD so refluxy! So nothing with tomatos, fruit, no juices, no coffee, no pickles, the list goes on and on :( I had some pineapple punch at a bridal shower recently, and DD cried the entire next day and had an awful diaper rash. I have also had to watch onions and cabbage AND dairy products in limited moderation. So basically bread, meat, some veggies, and lots and lots of water. Oh well, it's not forever, right?
  • I'm thinking tomato sauces might be bothering LO , I've only had pizza and/ salsa 3-4 times but each time within a day LO had an upset tummy.

How long after you eat something did it take before you noticed it effected LO?

The heavy cloak of food restrictions was lifted from my shoulders today...my poor little boy will now be a formula baby...had a GI appointment today because he had blood in stool from breast milk and blood in stool from special formula, so now we are trying the super special formula. The bitter sweet part was that my pumping was awesome...avg. 5-6oz per pumping 8x per day (he drinks 2oz per meal) I have a freezer FULL of breast milk and a baby who can't drink it. Looking into donating it. I was on a dairy free diet and was being told that the next step would be eliminating soy too.

OK good, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's having trouble identifying a culprit. Guess I need to keep log on my feeding app

  • How long from when you eat something do you all notice a reaction?
  • 12-24 hours for me.
  • I eat everything.. I would go nuts if when he's a little fussy thinking it was something I ate! lol (and feel bad too) 90% of the time he's not fussy or gassy so that works for me

Ditto to this. And I've read reactions aren't NEARLY as common as we think. From pregnancy, I've tried to expose LO to as much as possible. I do think kimchi night accounted for some of his fussiness the next day, but so it goes.
  • For me, I think anything that affected DD was within 12 hrs of me eating it.

Agreed.. Babies get fussy and gassy sometimes.. You can't automatically go off what you eat... it could be so many things as far as my diet goes lol. Way too much stress and work to worry about it.. There is a lot of research, like you said, that say reactions to what mom eats are very rare

  • I eliminated dairy, there was still occasional blood, eliminated soy -- beautiful yellow poops, no mucus, no blood -- and she's SO MUCH HAPPIER!!

Cutting out soy isn't as bad as you think, you end up eating a much cleaner diet -- less processed foods. Where soy is hidden.

OK, I'm going to disagree and say every baby is different. I thought the same thing. I read all the research and wasn't convinced. But then I had nothing to lose so I cut out foods. Now I actually have a happy baby during the day. We still have witching hours at night, but she smiles and coos every day. She used to go days without smiling and I had never heard her coo. And she can poop and fart without writhing and screaming. And she can sleep flat on her back. I will also say that with DS, I didn't change my diet at all and we NEVER had the kind of GI issues as with LO. Same parents, same diet, 2 different outcomes.

Also, there is still so much we don't know about pregnancy and post partum. Even if the research doesn't prove it now doesn't mean anything. Look at all of the dietary changes over the last few years. We're still learning. It doesn't hurt to cut out foods and it just might make a difference.

But who knows if that's what's making a difference? That's all I'm saying.. Research actually points to mothers diet not affecting baby the way it would affect mom (gas from veggies, etc) to each his own, do what works for you and your lo and everyone is different :)
  • @marinamarina - I envy your diet changes...I had the same problem and gave up when soy was put in the table. I am living with my in-laws while our house is under construction and they have not made dietary changes easy. The fridge AND freezer AND cabinets are filled to the gills with food and junk...leaving no room to store my food. I gave it my best shot...shoving food in any crevice I could find, but it was a loosing battle and I was miserable. I cannot take LO out in public yet (preemie on a monitor) so I couldn't even do my own shopping and even when I gave lists w/specific brands etc. I didn't get enough food to last but a small handful of days...and I despise putting people out so I felt bad asking for them to keep helping me. It was an epic fail. It was too much for me to handle living in their house and trying to cope with a baby on a monitor (we are crammed in a tiny room with our entire life worth of stuff and a new baby and the dog).
