OMG! Who's pregnant, you?!

I went to a soiree last night, and as soon as people found out that I was pregnant, (as usual) the comments/opinions started to fly. The favorites seemed to be "OMG! Who's pregnant, you?! and "You're small for 17.5 weeks".

I know that I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be, and that everyone is different blah, blah however the comments did get to me.  I think that everyone just expects a pregnant woman to look bloated and mumsy and when they don't see that, the easiest thing to say is that "You're small for xyz" - do you agree?

So far I've put on 3.5 kgs, and it's all definitely in my boobies and bumpie.  To put it in context: I'm 5'3, petite, a lover of running (I'm a strong believer in exercising through your pregnancy) and I follow a clean eating template, so the weight is going on slowly.

Is anyone in the same position as me? I've got my 18 week mid wife appointment in a couple of days, so will definitely be picking this up with her.

  • Awww thanks @scullahoo.  Agree, I think that there is this image of a pregnant woman that people have set in their mind and when you don't match it, it's a real disconnect for them.

  • I'm 16w and haven't put on any weight but LOOK like I did, thanks to bloating etc. Because I'm not used to my belly sticking out at all, I feel HUGE, but other people have actually asked if I have a baby bump yet, I'm like "Um...look down, can't you see it?"

    Yep @scullahoo, and I'm sure we'll love it & embrace it  ^:)^
  • I had a little extra fat before I got preggers and actually have lost some! People are like omg that's so unhealthy even after I say my doctor says its fine!
  • I had some extra pounds before pregnancy so I've only gained 2 (just about 1 kg). Doctor isn't concerned. I eat when I'm hungry, but I try to only snack on fruits, veggies, nuts and cheese. Everybody is different and as long as the doctor thinks you're healthy then block out the negative comments.
  • I'm 17+2 and I've gained 5-6 pounds. All in my boobs & little bump. Everybody is different though! I don't think people should comment a pregnant woman's size - big or small lol
  • I feel like i look like ive gained 20+ lbs but it's more like 11 lb at 19 wk tomorrow. I could understand why u were bothered by their comments though, but the probably meant u look great.

I must admit, before I got pregnant I was guilty of saying this to a friend or two. I just didn't know anything about pregnancy and so if they didn't look super pregnant I was surprised. I never meant any harm by it, and meant it more as a positive (don't know why I assumed pregnant ladies wanted to be told they looked skinny, but I did). I now realize how distressing or annoying it is to hear these kinds of comments, and I won't be making them in the future. Sorry you're having to deal with clueless people like I was!
  • 18 weeks is still early and the uterus and baby are quite small. When people think pregnancy they picture a 7 or 8 month baby bump I think.

People say things sometimes just to make conversation. I'm sure they don't mean it like "oh my gosh you're starving yourself and your baby!". Try not to be so sensitive about it what we HEAR isn't usually what is being said.
  • Totally get it & I'm not normally sensitive to that type of thing @knottie15742183 however, when people keep banging on about it, it becomes quite hard to ignore. :>
  • I've actually been surprised myself by how small & not pregnant I look, I just turned 18 weeks. I thought pregnant women looked my "more pregnant" by now. I'm most halfway and I can still easily hide it & wear my regular clothes. I've gained about 7 or 8 pounds mostly in my boobs & I've just become curvier rather than big bellied. It doesn't bother me.

I get that comment a lot still. When I get dressed I have to decide to dress 1 of 3 ways:

    1. Pregnant, by drawing a lot of attention to my belly with the aid of maternity shirts and/or empire waisted belts. Also touching my belly, a lot. Although it feels and seems dramatic at this point because I practically have to push out my belly to make an impact.

    2. Fat, or like I'm concealing a couple months worth of bad eating decisions (the most confusing for me and people). I generally have to "confirm" the suspicion and usually get a response like "OHHHHH".

    3. Not pregnant, by wearing baggier clothing that's intentionally big. Oversized boyfriend button downs, shift dresses, etc. Usually when I go this way, which is most often, I get comments similar to yours. "WOW YOU'RE HARDLY SHOWING!!!!" or "It's because your so tall the baby has lots of room" or something alluding to my healthy lifestyle prior to baby.

    Either way, pregnancy=unwarranted comments=opinions=whatever.

In November/December people will be saying different things. Props to you that your healthy and fit! Thanks for joining the Healthy Mama's FB page ;)

  • I totally get this! This is my second pregnancy and I know I'm bigger than I was at this point the first time around, but I still get comments from people saying how they think I'm barely showing. In my first pregnancy for the first several months many people said how small I looked and by the last couple months people were asking if I was sure there weren't two in there!
  • I wanted to punch my cousin in her face when she said that , "oh you don't look pregnant" that's because I'm not eating 6 cheeseburgers for breakfast like you did .
  • Luckily I haven't had any comments yet but I haven't gained any weight at all! This is my second pregnancy and it's twins, I look the same size as I did with my first at this point and that was only a singleton pregnancy. I'm 18 weeks today. Not everyone turns into a beached whale!
  • Yesterday I got my first stranger's comment of "Baby on board!" ............. awkward
  • My body has changed more than expected. I've gained 3 pounds but I get comments. I hope I don't look like a "beached whale." It is funny to hear everyone's options from "Look at the tiny bump!" to "Are you having twins." They're not consistent.

I shake off all of it and I'm attempting to embrace this new me and stop comparing myself to others. Height, previous weight, age, eating habits, torso length... Too many variables to worry about.
  • @essentialpeace THIS! The fact that people are inconsistent about their comments! I think it depends how well someone knows me...strangers and acquaintances keep saying I'm so small, but close friends and family squee that I'm getting a baby bump...and I just feel huge, lol, and DH sees me naked so he definitely notices every little change. I also have only gained a pound or two, but definitely have gained belly girth.
