I researched this about a year ago. We put a twin mattress on the floor in DS2 room to see if he would take to it but no dice. The only thing we took from my research is making sure most of his toys and books are at his level so he can access them better.
A coworker of mine did this with a twin mattress on the floor. He is quite the climber and tall for his age so could probably get out of the crib anyway. She said it worked for awhile but now he just leaves and crawls into bed with them. Me, I'm keeping my daughter in her crib as long as possible! I'm just thankful she's not a ninja climber/very tall!
He is still in a crib and has been. We fixed it up with some pillows and stuffed animals with the thought process being hopefully he will go in there on his own if he gets sleepy or will ask to lay on it instead of his crib, which never happened. It was actually part of my oldest bunk beds that we have recently put back together for him, so its not there anymore. It was really cute though while it was up!
My LO has never been in the crib (it's just an expensive piece of furniture sitting in her room!) She's almost 2 and cosleeps. We're planning to get a twin floor mattress for her in a couple months when we try to get her in her own room.
My LO goes to a Montessori program and we've been talking about it. He's nearly 2 and can't be bothered climbing out of the crib so I'm going to be wait til he tries his great escape before we move him anywhere. I googled some options but found lots of them out of stock. Let me know if you find something you love as I want to see what you get!

My mom just used a mattress on the floor with me, but I do really like some of the little frames. Haven't managed to actually find more than pictures of them so far... Thinking they can't be *that* hard to make if I (ahem, my husband) was feeling ambitious.
