California Rolls!!!

How come I never figured out with my first two pregnancies that I could eat California Rolls!?  I don't know why it never occurred to me that they only have imitation crab which is not raw fish and therefor are totally fine to eat.  I now have an outlet for my sushi cravings! Yay!!

And yes I did find this to be vital information that required it's own post ;-)

imitation crab is made from the fish Pollock, just FYI

ETA: it is cooked, but you have to treat it as you would with cold cuts re: listeria.

Hmmm, well I've already eaten a bunch :-/  But then again I eat a lot of cold sandwiches so I guess I just need to weigh the risks.
  • I have eaten cooked sushi this entire pregnancy. I LOVE sushi and that's my fix. Happy eating mama!

As long as your trust the source, I say go for it! I've gotten sushi since finding out I was pregnant and I had california rolls and ate them without a second thought. It was delicious too :)

  • And also shrimp tempura rolls! Since they're cooked too. I was missing sushi so much. With the seaweed, rice, soy sauce, not to mention the side salad and miso soup, you get a lot of the same flavors, almost the same experience
  • I was going to add shrimp too! I love sushi and this is what gets me through. It's not the same as good fresh sushi, but it will do for 9 months.
  • I eat lots of cooked sushi. It's bad enough I had to give up wine!
  • Call me boring but I usually get the spicy california rolls with crunchy... So I'm still enjoying my sushi!! Wish I had some now!
  • I had a California roll while visiting California, and I'm pretty sure they used real crab. Which had to be cooked anyway, so I call that safe. But it was pretty amazing.
And I've planned a sushi date with H in the near future with all this sushi talk. I'll find a way...

  • I just have vegetarian sushi it's so amazing...and for some reason tastes even better while pregnant!!!
  • I've thoroughly been enjoying Firecracker Rolls. They have cream cheese, jalapeno, imitation crab, crunchy bits, and sweet & spicy sauce. Sooo good! Maybe your sushi place has something like that.

Been craving sushi but wasn't sure if I really should eat it. After reading everyone's posts, I think I'm gonna go for it (minus eating raw of course).
    Thanks ladies!!!
    ;)

  • Yum. Now I just want a rainbow roll.

  • I read to stay away from all sushi because it's all prepared same place.
  • I ate a ton of sushi , salmon sashimi included last week. I have really intense sushi cravings. I can't say no.

Sorry, I don't quite understand this.. Why should you stay away from sushi?

Maybe because bacteria on raw fish would find its way onto your sushi?
That bring said, I'm still eating it. I have decent sushi spots ands I trust their cleanliness.
  • @oregontrailmom ah, ok, that makes sense. I first read it as every sushi place has their stuff prepared from the same place and I was like, "uh, I'd trust a place on the coast more than somewhere inland..."

You can tell I just woke up...

*shudders* all I can think about is the cooler section grocery store sushi. I've tried it, but definitely would avoid while pregnant lol.
  • We are having sushi tomorrow!!! My 5 year old loves it and asked if we could go. I've been looking forward to it all week!!!

  • I miss sushi so much :((

DH gets it all the time. It always looks good but it never tastes as good as fresh. God I'm really craving sushi now so hopefully I can convince DH to take me for dinner!
  • We have a fancy schmancy grocery store that at lunch sometimes brings in the sushi chefs from a hoity toity place downtown that I would occasionally get. That was the only grocery store sushi I've ever had. H suggested I get some when he was looking at the grocery store Chinese food the other day and I almost gagged. No thanks!

  • I had an app at a restaurant the other day- a jalapeño stuffed with raw spicy tuna, breaded and fried just enough to cook through the jalapeño. Yes it was raw fish but it was from a reputable restaurant and it was SO yummy!!

I'm not going crazy eating raw fish. So far that was my first time and I will probably again, just won't push my luck with it! Only from good restaurants and only on occasion :)
