High Blood Pressure

hey everyone,

I'm a week away from my third trimester, and went to the doctor yesterday for my GD test. The nurse took my bp twice, the first time it was a little high 120/83 second time 140/73. My doctor is concerned because that's much higher then my normal bp, and is sending me for preeclampsia testing and a follow up with her early next week. She also put me on restrictions at work, and said I might have to stop working altogether. Has anyone experienced this at all?

Re: High Blood Pressure

  • I'm sorry to hear this . What do they do for ore eclampsia testing? My blood pressure was also a lot higher than usual but my doctor didn't seem worried.

  • I'm in a much similar boat. 26 weeks and I had blood pressure that was in the 200's Wednesday morning. (Turns out from dehydration) I was given an I.V. and it went down. I go in Monday for an u/s and Tuesday for more testing. I was warned that it could be a sign of preeclampsia and they took a lot of blood to do a base line to compare other tests on it. I was also warned that I might have to go on bed rest soon if it doesn't start mellowing out. It sucks and it's scary. Trust your Dr. and your body! Thinking of you, keep us updated!
  • I had this last time I was pregnant. Had high blood pressure the entire time, but it got really serious towards the end. I was diagnosed with preeclampsia at week 35 and had to be induced at week 37. I was put on bedrest the first week and when my urine analysis came back the following week with traces of protein in it and (still bp was high) she scheduled an induction. The only difference in delivery was I had to stay in L&D longer (usually they move you after baby comes). They had to monitor the BP for 6 hrs until I was cleared.

I hope this info helps and you do not have pre-e, but for some chance you do; listen to your doctor and monitor your BP levels (I also bought a machine for home, so I could write the results down 3 times a day). Feel better!!
  • I've been fine this time, knock on wood. But last pregnancy I was put on bed rest at 35 weeks. I was able to go past my due date because it stayed down. She was born at 41 weeks.

What helped me was buying a my own BP cuff and taking it at home 3-4 times a day. I kept a log and brought it in to show them. As long as I was relaxing it stayed at about 120/70, which they were very happy with. If it ever got to 150/90 I was instructed to call labor and delivery. It never did, luckily.

I noticed when I went to appointments I would always be worried it was high. Which caused it to spike. So I would request to lay on my left side on the table for 5 minutes first and then take it. It was always lower. My midwife would also take it again at the end of the appointment and it was usually even further down.

You'll likely have to do a few 24 hour urine collections to make sure it's not turning to pre-e. I did it 5 times last pregnancy! Not fun but they always came back ok so baby got to keep cooking.
I also had weekly NSTs and a fe extra ultrasounds to make sure she was ok.
  • Thanks so much everyone! We're going to buy a bp cuff today to start monitoring daily. I appreciate all of your kind words!
  • At my 27 week appointment, there was protein in my urine (trace, which has happened off and on the whole pregnancy), but my blood pressure was also higher for me than it has been (120/90). I had to do the 24 hour test. I'm wondering what numbers people got on that test? Mine came back with 243mg.
  • My dr wanted to put me on bedrest for my BP and swelling. I think it was around 34 weeks. I told him no I didn't have the time to go on maternity leave early. So he induced at 39w3d.
  • 120/83??? Why recheck it, that wasnt high at all. They need it under 140/90. It went up a second time because they told you it was high the first. Mine was 136/91 then 128/84. So the first reading got me pre-e screenings like the 24 hour urine. Since then I've been taking it manually home at random times and my pressures have been 110s/70s. Im not upset that my midwife was being proactive but the stress of the possibility of pregnancy induced hypertension and pre-e just made my pressure higher.
