Tachycardia?

I was wondering if any of you have had tachycardia this pregnancy? In an otherwise healthy pregnancy, in a routine appointment (I'm 37w6d) my heart rate was faster then my babies! I was admitted to hospital for the last 3 days under constant cardiac monitoring. I have had all the tests under the sun and they can't find the cause for it.... Now they are talking about sending me home as they can't find anything wrong. On the one hand I can't wait to get home, on the other, why is my heart rate between 100-150bpm at rest?! Anyone else experienced this?

Re: Tachycardia?

  • I was tachycardic through out my entire pregnancy. I remember while I was in labor my heart rate stayed in the 120s-130s. The nurse actually kicked some family members out of the room so I could rest. My doctor didn't seem concerned too much.

  • Wow I'm surprised they admitted you for that. I had pregnancy induced tachycardia with my last 2 pregnancies. My heart rate was frequently higher than my baby's heart rate (I ran 160s). I was seen by a cardiologist and had all the testing done as an out patient. They also found no cause other than pregnancy. Since delivery I've been back to a normal range.

    Hope you feel better!

Yes, I was tachycardic during my first trimester -- at least 120 while resting. No one seemed concerned, since I guess it's a common issue as your body builds a bigger blood supply. My pulse isn't as high now, so I don't have experience with tachycardia late in pregnancy. Early on, though, I was instructed to drink lots of water and get extra rest. Hope you feel better soon!
  • Yep, me too. Apparently it's very normal and not something to be concerned about. I can't stand for more than a couple of minutes bc I feel like I'll pass out. I had an overnight stay in the cardiac unit as well and was told it was just pregnancy-induced. No worries mama!
  • I developed an arrhythmia around the beginning of the second trimester during my first pregnancy.  It gradually turned into bigeminy with runs of V-tach throughout the day.  I was kept in a hospital for about a week and monitored around week 34, but was released after medication brought it under control.  I didn't have any more issues until I went into labor, was able to have a low-stress vaginal birth, and was cleared by a cardiologist a few weeks after I had my daughter. The only lingering issue I have now is an increased awareness of my PVCs, which are infrequent enough that the doctor isn't worried.

I'm on my second pregnancy now but still in the first trimester, so I'm interested to see if any heart problems crop up this time.  My theory is that my blood volume had increased to the point where my heart was stressed, but the doctors i saw weren't able to point to any specific cause.
