Traveling Overseas!

Hello ladies!!! This is my first pregnancy (5w2d), and I just so happen to be travelling overseas to Europe for a family vacation this Friday. I've read some articles about overseas flights (using compression stockings, etc.), but I was curious if there are other Moms out there that have traveled in their first trimester that could give me tips. I'm also not telling my parents until my second trimester, and they'll be coming with me. So far, only symptoms I've been having is some light nausea, and fatigue. Any advice on being in close quarters and keeping baby a secret? Thanks ladies!

Re: Traveling Overseas!

  • Woo European vacation! Have fun! I wouldn't stress about it too much. I leave for Europe on Thursday and I'm not really doing anything special for the flight. I'll take some zofran and B6/Unisom with me just in case but I'll probably just take my normal meclizine(as long as the OB approves). Last time I only wore the compression socks when I was super pregnant, like 32 weeks,  and had swelling in my ankles to begin with.

  • Thanks so much!!! I have to clear meclizine too...I'm going on a cruise for a week, so I'm sure I'm going to need it. Great idea to do the unisom /b6 for nausea!
  • I'm don't think you need to do anything more than what you'd normally do for an international flight. Biggest thing would be to get up and stretch your legs a few times. I do that on long flights, pregnant or not. I flew internationally at around 34 weeks, though it wasn't a super long flight, and didn't need to do anything special. Except carry a letter from my doctor saying I was allowed to fly!

  • With DS I flew across country at 14 weeks, my OB recommended the compression socks OR to make sure that I got up and walked around once an hour during the flight.
  • I highly recommend the compression socks!
  • I think ti's early enough that you don't have to worry too much about the flight, etc. Try to get an aisle seat so that you can get up to pee as needed. Have fun!

  • Water. Water. Water! Airplanes are so dry and can dehydrate you very quickly when you're pregnant. Make sure to get up once an hour to stretch your legs too!

  • I have to take quite a few flights every month for work so I specifically asked my doctor about it and she said there was no issue at all.

Drinking lots of water and having an aisle seat so you can get out easily sounds like very good advice to me though

    Enjoy your holidays :)
  • Thanks ladies! Today's travelling day, and I'm also official 6w today...and just like clockwork, unprovoked nausea had kicked in (I woke up nauseous). I went ahead and bought compression stockings, but now I'm definitely going to CVS to get the unisom and b6 before I hop on my flight!!!! Thank you so much again!!
  • Have a great time!

  • I found out I was pregnant with DD three days before I left for Ireland. Thankfully the ms didn't set in until I got back! I second the water thing. Bring your own on because our stewardess didn't come around much.

  • I'm traveling to India this December (3rd time traveling there) and I'm a little nervous about the flight. I will be close to 16 weeks at that time. Any advice would be helpful. First time being pregnant!
