I've just started researching this... What are people's thoughts?! Who'll be doing it? Who has done it and found it helped to prevent/lessen tearing?? Any input on this I am interested in
I read up on it during my first pregnancy and thought it was silly so I didn't do it. I tore. I did it during my second pregnancy and it certainly helped with delivery and recovery. I'm doing it for my third, haha. It may seem silly, but it's pretty simple and just becomes part of your routine.
Or you could make it something fun between you and your partner, hehe.
I've researched this quite a bit because I don't want an episiotomy under any circumstances. From what I understand, there are a number of factors that contribute to tearing and it seems that massaging the perineum during pregnancy doesn't decrease the possibility of tearing.
A slow and controlled delivery and perineum massage and manipulation when the baby is crowning are most effective.
I started super late with my first and had minor tearing. Didn't with my second and no tears. I really feel the difference for me was the first doctor just kinda stood there and it was loud and chaotic and lots of "PUSH PUSH PUSH". With my second it was so chill. The doctor was very hands on and helped ease baby out.
If you want to try it I say go for it. It can't hurt. The mid wife who told me about it told me to use olive oil.
I'm a FTM and going to try it. If it has a chance to help, why not? Doesn't necessarily sound fun but tearing badly is one of my big fears and I really want to avoid an episiotomy. My chance of c-section due to IGUR and a cord abnormality is high though, so I might be doing it for nothing. We'll see...
My L&D nurse did this some during delivery, and the doctor certainly did some during crowning. I did nothing ahead of time and had a very small tear...not even second degree. Baby was sunny side up and 7lbs 7oz.
Your body is going to do what it's going to do no matter what you do to prepare.

This coupled with the speed of your delivery will determine how much tearing you have.
Good luck!
