Need tips from working mommies...

I am teaching graduate students and tonight, I had the strongest cramps and horrible gas... How do you guys deal with this at work? When I'm home I just burrow under blankets, but I can't let loose in class, or stop the class to go to the washroom...

Do you guys have any tips? Thanks in advance ❤️

  • "um, excuse me I need to use the restroom?" Or find a closet. I do that at work sometimes.

  • It's actually pretty hard to leave the class when you are teaching it :( I did it once as an emergency and the students wrote about it in my evaluation at the end of the class. It's like they can talk, be on Facebook, and walk out, but teachers are expected to be 100% there and focussed no matter what. Which is getting a bit harder for me these days since all I want to do is sleep and eat, and go to the washroom 50 times a day...
  • I work with a bunch of guys who over share. I have accidentally passed wind quietly and watched amused as they all blame each other. So just mist the classroom. Super gross but if you hold it in it makes the cramps worse and your stomach hurt.
  • Understood… then I agree with her ^^^^

  • Hmmmm I will now have a toxic classroom
  • Can you set a water bottle off to the side (away from the front row) and have them read a PowerPoint slide or something while you step aside "for a drink of water".

I feel you, though, we don't have a very private bathroom at my work, and I get pretty uncomfortable trying to hold things in or stressing out the whole time I'm in there!

  • Let your class know (when you feel comfortable doing so) that you are pregnant. You won't believe how much understanding and compassion they will give you for stepping out of the class when appropriate.

  • Thanks guys! I'll work with the water:) And I'm sure I'll be comfortable telling the class I'm pregnant in September (when hopefully I'll be showing and not able to hide it anyway!!!).
  • Ask your doctor about their recommendation for using gas-x. It stays in your GI tract and dissolves all the gas bubbles (it's the same stuff that's in Mylicon for infants.) It has been a life saver for my gas pains at work since I'm really nervous about grossing out my coworkers in such a small space!
  • Thanks @Jilmce19, I will definitely ask:)
  • Given that you teach graduate students, you should be able to share with them that you are pregnant and sometimes things arise that are sudden and unexpected and you may have to briefly excuse yourself. They should understand and be allowed the same.

  • I work as a spa therapist and cannot leave the room to go to the toilet or for any reason really so if I'm feeling really crappy I'll get the sweats...even the shakes but have to stay there massaging till the bitter end lol...I've let one go in a massage once...oh no actually on 2 occasions...one was silent and one a little louder which I masked with clearing my throat...or at least I'd like to believe I did hahaha
Jobs where you can't go anywhere when you feel like crap just suck...its at this point when I miss working in administration!
  • That sounds like a nightmare @tegzy Hopefully some of that passes for you soon.

But OP, I agree with PPs, the water idea is pretty good. Go with that or try to be as discrete as possible. Hopefully something like the Gas-x works for you too!
  • I'm sorry that totally blows (no pun intended!) I haven't really had this problem too much but when I have I just go to the restroom, but then again I just work at a desk so it's a little easier. I do agree that if you tell your students you're pregnant and may need to step out here and there, they would definitely understand. Hope it gets better asap! Good luck!

  • I guess if I did tell the students it would be easier, but I sort of decided not to tell the school until September/October (somehow they feel very inconvenienced when teachers get pregnant -I've seen it happen to other ppl...), so I wouldn't want to be outed by students just yet.. I'm looking into gas-x and last class I gave them lots of group work and prep time (so I could move around:)

@Tegzy that sounds so much worst than my case!!! I feel for you! Massage therapist is such a physically demanding job, especially since you have to be up on your feet for long periods of time! My brother does the same job and he often has back pain... One idea is to maybe have music that can help mask "other" sounds? At one point they used Tibetan bell music at the spa... I think a lot could go undetected with that
