Did anyone opt out of having their 3 hour glucose test after failing the 1 hour test?

I failed my one hour glucose test and went in for my three hour test and couldn't stomach the sugary drink. I felt nauseous and wanted to throw up. It took me twenty minutes to finish just have of the little bottle. The lab tech said that it should have been done in 5 minutes and now its no point to even take the test and that I would have to come back and start all over again. I don't want to put my body through that again. My one hour results were 175 with the cut off being 140.

  • You should continue the test.  Sure you don't want to put your body through that again, but you don't want to put your baby through labour and delivery if you have unmanaged GD.

Your other option--and talk to your primary care giver about this one--is assuming you have GD and starting your glucose monitoring and managed diet.  You'll know after a couple weeks whether or not diet will help you manage your glucose levels, and whether or not you'll need insulin.

  • I went twice for my 3 hour test. First time, I wasn't told I couldn't drink any water so after my 3rd blood draw they told me it was invalid. Mind you, I was sitting directly in front of them for 3 hours drinking the water and acknowledging that I was drinking water 4 times. The 2nd time I made it to the office at 11:45 but the office closed at 3. While they were chatting it up, they didn't pull my first blood until 12:05 then decided they couldn't do it anymore since they would be closing at 3pm.

In return, I told my doctor I couldn't take more time off work to come and redo the 3 hour test. She diagnosed me as a gestational diabetic so I could get a machine and testing strips and I have to self test 4 times a day for the next week. I have to take all my results with me to my appt next week and she will reevaluate it. She said it would be a lot more accurate than the 3 hour test so not to worry about it. I'm 30 weeks today.
  • i know people who skipped it but tbh failing the one hour with a 175 seems quite high to me. i had a 139 on my one hour and debated not doing the 3 hour since i knew i ate a couple of huge chocolate chip cookies around 9pm the night before the test... but ended up going anyway for peace of mind. i know several people including my sister who skipped the 3 hour after they failed the one hour and everything was fine with their babies, but i wanted to know for sure and not have to constantly worry/feel guilty about eating too many carbs/sugars and the impact it might be having on my baby. the three hour test is certainly an unpleasant ordeal so i get where you are coming from. i almost passed out between hours 2 and 3 and had to be given ice packs to put on my neck. but i made it through the last draw, and i passed the test. i am so happy that i did it and know for sure that i don't have GD. the test is a sacrifice of your time and comfort and in the end might be unnecessary but in my view it's worth the discomfort to get a little more assurance of a healthy baby (even though there are, of course, no guarantees).
  • I did opt out of the 3-hour test after failing the 1-hour. I got 154 when the cut-off was 139 (if I remember correctly). I was also 31 weeks by the time I got the test.

I decided to opt out because I didn't want to go trough the 3-hour test and fail knowing I had the option to just start changing my diet and monitoring my blood sugar right away. I was suspecting I might have GD anyway because my weight gain increased suddenly despite my diet staying the same, and at my 31-week appointment, I was measuring 34 weeks.

You can't opt out just because it's inconvenient. You can, as PP said, take the test to give yourself the peace of mind that you don't have GD (assuming you pass). Or you can opt out and start counting every carb and checking your blood sugar 4 times a day. There's no easy way out, unless you want to risk the health of your baby.

  • I have decided to opt out of a second 3-hour glucose test after passing the 1-hour and 3- hour glucose test previously. Mind you, I wasn't told to fast before the 1-hour, and I barely passed, but I still passed.

I failed the 1 hour with a level of 163. I just knew I would pass the 3 hour, but nope, failed it big time! I'm happy I didn't skip it so that I know for sure I have GD and I stay motivated to stay on a strict diet. I think if I were to modify my diet without knowing if I had GD or not, I would allow myself to cheat a bit!

Until I started testing my blood sugar, I second-guessed my decision to opt out of the 3-hour test for the same reason. I was thinking, what if I DON'T have GD? It never hurt anyone to eat healthy and monitor their blood glucose, but to give up ice cream unnecessarily? No way. The numbers don't lie, though. Either way, it's worth the peace of mind.

  • @sweetiepop, considering how high your 1-hour number is, I would seriously consider sitting down with your doctor to discuss the GD diet route if you don't want to do the 3-hour test. I think there are plenty of moms here who would tell you that going through the 3-hour test is much easier than pricking your finger 4 times a day (@MamaOwl15), but I think you must have known when you asked the question that the worst case scenario/result is just that you need to follow the GD diet so your LO can be safe and healthy. Pregnancy isn't easy and it often means we make a lot of changes to our personal lives that are emotionally and mentally challenging, but I assure you that keeping that LO in good health will be your greatest feat. I encourage you to go back for the 3-hour test to be sure, but if you need to skip it, discuss the option of just beginning the GD diet with your doctor. I wish you well!

  • I failed the 1st & 2nd test now I have to
Monitor my sugar for 3 weeks straight- 4 times at day! If all is good after that- they don't have to see me anymore. All my sugar numbers are normal. I find this a complete waste of time!
I'm not even close to being overweight or having high blood pressure and I feel great! For me personally- I really wish I had not taken any glucose test! The worst part is, my ob said the test was completely optional?!!!
  • I just had my 1 hr glucose test over the weekend and the results came back high at 174.  It was a surprise given that I haven't gained much weigh in my pregnancy yet (5 lbs for 24 weeks). Where do I go from here? Should I contact my doctor for the 3 hr test or do I wait for my next appmt with OB doctor? Please advise.

I'd reach out to schedule, if you have GD it's best you get it under control sooner rather than later. Good luck to you.
  • Skip the 3 hour and start monitoring your sugars. That what I did and it's not too bad. Wished I skipped the one hour and went straight to monitoring. 33 weeks and definitely have GD but it all food controlled. Haven't really had to change my diet but had to eliminate sugary drinks... They were my only vice during pregnancy! Oh well, all the better for baby and me to avoid them. Good luck!
  • @evergreen85, if your doctor hasn't contacted you already, I'd contact them. Like @acp527 said, you don't need to take the 3-hour test if you just start monitoring your sugar and changing your diet. This is what I opted to do, being 31 weeks at the time of the 1-hour test.

It's kind of a PITA to check your sugar 4x a day, but the diet part isn't so bad. If you're eating pretty clean and getting plenty of protein now, you may not have to change much. But even if you have to go on glybyride or insulin, it's not so bad for a couple months.

  • Very dangerous not to take the 3 hour test, if you have GD and don't deal with it properly you can give yourself actual diabetes even after you deliver and your baby could as well...my advice is to suck it up its the responsible thing to do for you and your baby. GD is not a fat person thing either and simply changing your diet isn't enough...when pregnant some woman's bodies just cannot do it all and have to stop certain functions...one being digesting glucose. If you actually have diabetes then diet changes are not enough to reverse or lessen or even manage it.
  • I failed my one-hour glucose test and the last thing I wanted to do was sit in a waiting room for three hours and have my blood drawn four times. But, I did it. Why? Because if I happen to have GD, I would need to get it under control ASAP for the well being of my child and myself. Thankfully, I ended up passing my three-hour test, but I was prepared to make changes if I had been diagnosed with GD. I know it sucks, but you can do this!! It's just one of not-so-fun things that you have to do while pregnant.

O'15 September Siggy Challenge -- Third Trimester Woes
  • I failed my 1 hour glucose test with a 151.... took the 3 hour test which I felt was not too bad... I also had the orange liquid and it was chilled a bit so maybe that is why it was a bit more bearable.

The only instructions I was given was to fast.  I started fasting at 12:10am the night before as I returned from vacation really late because our flight was delayed and we were stuck sitting in the plane on our way back from vacation due to windy conditions and my husband insisted that I must eat and baby as well as I was super hungry ... there was no real food on the plane and we only had breakfast .... I was told no water during the test.  I did drink a little water in the morning because I felt dehydrated from the flights (1 connecting flight).... I started the test at 9:10am and did feel light headed during the test but it might have been hunger kicking in .... I'm waiting to receive my results.  Hopefully I will pass this second test.

For those of you who need to monitor your sugar did the doctor set you up with the finger stick apparatus or did you have to work with your insurance to get all the supplies?  I have UHC and found it a pain to get my Rhogam injection and if I land out having GD, I rather be prepared for the hassle ahead of time.  Thanks!

  • Just do it. I had a HORRIBLE reaction to the 1-hour, I'm talking fever, headache, weakness, etc. for nearly two days. I found out I was 2 points over the cut off. Even though I know that my OB cuts off at 135 instead of 140, even though I know I'm HYPOglycemic and not HYPERglycemic and that I don't fit into a single of the pre-curseres to GD... I did it anyways. The thing is, you just don't know. It's not that you yourself are diabetic it's just your body reacting in certain ways to the pregnancy that could affect your LO. It's not worth it to me. Yeah, I felt like crap before, during and after the 3 hour and yeah, it came back completely normal... but at least I KNOW instead of asking "what if?" and being afraid of everything I eat.

As for getting it down fast? Hold your breath and channel your inner frat boy. When I tried to drink it I could tell I was going to throw it up. Chug, then breath through your nose, then small sips of water. Also, if they give you the bottle as for a cup. If I had to have had it out of the bottle the same thing probably would have happened so I just asked.
