Mommy and Me

Just curious, has anyone gone to previously or plan to go to mommy and me classes with your little ones? Are they fun/worth it? I need something to get out of the house (husband works 12+ hour days and have very few friends here) and I think it would be nice to talk to other moms and to socialize my baby. I found a place near me who offers classes starting at 4 months; I was just curious if anyone had done it before or planned to and if it's worth it or not?

Re: Mommy and Me

  • It's worth it. I took LO to local library for baby story time. She was the youngest one there but it was nice to go to meet other parents and caregivers.

  • I haven't gone yet but definitely am planning to. I went to a baby carrying workshop this week and it was so nice to interact with other new moms. I haven't found any classes/groups that start really until September. I'm also finding it tough to find ones for LO's this young. Most are more for kids that are sitting up or more interactive. Like PP, I am going to go to a "Rhyme Time" our library offers and then also hoping to do some programs at our school too. We are also on a tight budget with me being a SAHM so I'm trying to find groups that are free or minimal cost. I know I will go stir crazy at home all day. I try to do one thing with DS every day, even if it's just putting him in the carrier and walking around the block.
  • I plan to at 6 months. $82 is a bit much for me to justify at this age. He's 10 weeks. I'll look into free programs at the library this week.
  • I wish we all lived nearby and could have play groups! It's difficult to find other LOs of the same age in my area.

We've been doing a local baby gym class since eight weeks. While others have started threads criticizing people for spending money on things like this, where I go to is fairly inexpensive and my son absolutely loves it. He smiles for the entire class. Plus it's really nice to be around other babies of a similar age and meet new moms

Do you go to Gymboree, or is it something done by a local school?

Why are people being criticized for spending their own money on something like this? That makes no sense to me. Im willing to spend what I can afford to get the baby out and to socialize him with other babies. Plus, the place I was looking at does specific activities for his age range to help with milestones like rolling and crawling, so how is that a bad thing especially for a first time mom. I often feel like I'm not doing enough to help him reach those milestones. Sorry, didn't mean to rant.
  • I'm going to start 'swimming lessons' next month with DD, I think it's $60 for 8 weeks.  Again, I don't care about the cost, it's going to get us out of the house, and since my parents next door have a pool, I want her to be comfortable in the water as early as possible.  There's also a baby massage class (free), and I think some library story times.  Most things don't run in the summer though, so I haven't started these yet.  There's other mom and me groups, but I'll see....I'm old and rather late to the game as a ftm - my neighbours with young babies are kids I babysat, for crying out loud.

Yep I go to Gymboree three times a week and we love it! His smiles are worth every penny
  • Have any of you seen twins (with only one parent with them) at any of the activities you go to? Or have an opinion whether it's do-able? I want to get involved in something but it's just me with two babies and I'm not sure whether it is a good idea. I'm fairly ambitious with them in terms of taking them out in a lot of public places by myself but nothing formal like this.
