UTI, Oh No!

So I searched for this topic in the BMB and didn't see anyone really have this issue discussed. I just wanted to know what your course of action when if you ever had a UTI while pregnant. I just went to the doctor and got some antibiotics but those of you who have been in some serious pain from UTI's, what did you do after you got the antibiotics and did the feeling ever get worse? My instructions are very vague but I don't want to be tough and tough out the pain when I could be doing more harm then good for the baby.

Re: UTI, Oh No!

  • Last pregnancy when I had one I just took antibiotics and drank cranberry juice. I would have taken tylenol if the pain had gotten bad, I was told tylenol is fine.

  • When I had them in the past (pre-pregnancy), I started noticing the antibiotics working after about 3 days, but just remember keep taking them until they are gone. I never had the feeling it was getting worse, but just that it took a few days to really start noticing. I also never got symptoms of UTI's until it reached my kidneys and that's when I thought I was going to die.

It sucks because I'm in so much pain right now and I can't take the usual stuff that makes the pain part go away. I'm no stranger to UTI's, get them all the time. This is just my first while pregnant and usually those little orange pills take the pain away. What did you do once it hit your kidneys? How does the doctor know if it hit your kidneys?

  • They did a urine test and found out it was full blown kidney infection. I got some sort of antibiotics (can't remember what they were off the top of my head) and after 10 days I think it was gone.

  • Usually once it has hit kidneys you'll have more severe sxs such as lower back pain, chills, fever, nausea and vomiting.
For now I'd take antibiotic and drink up a bunch of cranberry juice. If sxs increase after a couple of days I would call the MD.
  • Oh wow, ok. Yeah I think my urine was too diluted but it's gonna take them two days to get my culture back. They have me on Cephalexin 4 times a day. So there isn't anything to do for the pain? I have tylenol but that won't usually help...

Did you ask your doctor about
phenazopyridine? (Orange pill). Idk if it's safe during pregnancy.
  • Yeah they said it wasn't safe to take.

    Sorry :(
I've heard ginger tea, cranberry juice, tons of water, applying heat to bladder area.
Hope the pain eases up soon!
  • Thank you. I'm gonna try to muster the courage to get out of bed and grab some cranberry juice. A hot shower did feel nice then again it could have just been the heat, maybe I'll try that!

  • I had a really terrible UTI @11 weeks. It took 5 days for the antibiotics to work. To ease the pain, I drank tons of water with those "urine alkalizers" sp? It was the only thing that helped me. Sending healing vibes your way. I know how painful they can get.
  • I also suffer from chronic UTI's, but thankfully I've only had one at the start of my pregnancy. I always drink tons of water to ease the pain. I always get sick when taking the orange pills so I usually don't. I would just drink glass after glass of water or all natural cranberry juice while taking my antibiotic. Sorry you're in pain! It's the worst!
  • Thanks ladies! Was put on Cephalexin and my pain is gone but I'm on the antibiotics for a whole week. Just like you @abbyanneheird I get them from time to time but this was my first during pregnancy and I was worried that it would get really bad. Thankfully the meds kicked in that same day, as we all know they suck so bad!!

those orange pills are life savers usually. That sucks that they aren't safe. Ive had many a UTI too and without those pills the antibiotics seem so much slower to kick in. Hope you are feeling better!
