Hypothyrodism

my levels were at around 11 weeks TSH -2.97 & t4-14 pmol/L , my OB put me on a low dose of levothyroxine/ synthroid 25mcg daily, she mentioned that she would like to see TSH lower than 2, anyone else been diagnosed with hypothyrodism during pregnancy? Are you having some symptoms of low thyroid function? I had some symptoms--- thining hair, lack of energy, anxiety..well hopefully it will help me to feel me much better as well:)

Re: Hypothyrodism

  • There are a few I think... @PedsIsHardcore is one I remember... Any advice?

    Good luck :)

  • I've had it for 11 years now, already had to increase my dose since being pregnant. I've had increased tiredness but that's also just a symptom of being pregnant.
  • I take a low dose of synthroid as well, which I started about 3mos before my BFP. Even for people with subclinical hypothyroidism, my MW said most providers like to treat it for those pregnant or planning to be because fetuses rely on mom's thyroid function/hormones since they don't make their own for a while.

I was told by my endo that I need to do my blood work every 3 months during my pregnancy to adjust the levels for myself and my babies(twins). I would suggestion you talk to your OBGYN about having your levels checked regularly throughout your pregnancy. I went from my normal none pregnant 100mg to now 150mg for this pregnancy. Pregnancy will make you tired anyways so when you combine that with thyroid disorder it makes you even more sluggish.
  • Thank you for your replies, I have been having all kinds of hypothyroid symptoms with TSH of 2.6-2.97 for the last 10 years. Doctors always said I'm in the normal range and the symptoms are not thyroid related. Im glad they decided to treat it this pregnancy. And check levels every 4-6 weeks. I had a pregnancy loss back in January, they check things more often this time around.
  • I have had hypothyroidism for over 12 years with a low dose of 50mcg. My obgyn said I need to get my levels checked every month. I still haven't had to adjust my medication yet and I'm 14wks pregnant. I do take selenium and kelp though, which helps with the absorption and distribution.
  • I have it. I normally take 137 of Synthroid. During my last two pregnancies, I required one extra pill on Sundays, just slightly increasing the dose.

This time, it turns out that pregnancy dose is too much! I am now hyper due to meds so they have lowered me to 125 daily and I will retest in 6 weeks. Hyper symptoms are horrible! I had never been hyper before but whoa. I am glad they lowered my dose because it was feeling crappy.

I have been on thyroid meds for almost 24 years though. I was diagnosed in my early teens.

  • I've been hypothyroid for 14 years and been on synthroid for 10. Since becoming pregnant, I may have had some symptoms, but they're also common pregnancy symptoms (loss of appetite, feeling cold, fatigue). My doctor checked my levels at my first appointment at 7w5d and will check them every trimester unless things get weird
  • My doctor told me my thyroid levels were high and she was rechecking my blood but I never heard anything back from her so I guess I'm ok. I have a check up on Friday so I'll ask more then. I know I can sleep for 16+ hours and still feel tired.
  • I was diagnosed with it during my last pregnancy. It was/is very mild though. I never got any numbers but my synthroid was only .50 mcg, I think. I stopped taking it after I had my LO and haven't been checked since, bad I know. But I will be checked at my upcoming appt. as far as symptoms go, I noticed I was losing a lot of hair in the shower or when I brushed, and I definitely felt very fatigued.

Yup, Hypothyroid here, technically. The meds help, and it's important to take them! I thought I needed to go off of them for my first... baaaaad idea. The lack of energy was.... horrible.

  • I am hypothyroid. Slight elevated level at 8 weeks of 2.7 put on 25mcg of synthroid every other day to lower it. Dr says they like it below 2 during pregnancy. Will check TSH every month.
  • Anyone had headaches as a side effect from synthroid? I am having headaches for the last 3 days, not sure if its just a pregnancy or synthroid could cause that. Thanks!
  • I had my thyroid tested prior to pregnancy for weight gain, fatigue, mood swings and dry skin. My TSH was 3.6 my DR said this was normal and only anything over 5.0-5.5 is concern. I see some people are on medication at 2.7?!? I wonder if I should talk to my midwife.
  • I've been on 50mcg of levothyroxine (or the like) since I was 17, about 12 years. When we were TTC, I read about the effects hypothyroidism can have on developing babies, so I was a bit paranoid. I had a full work up done just before my BFP and my doctors have checked it about every 4 weeks since. I'm about 14 weeks with twins now and haven't had to adjust my dose yet. I think if your not previously hypo, doctors will check each trimester, but for those of us with the chronic disorder, they check much more often.

The worst symptom I've had in the last 12 years is exhaustion...so that was fun with the addition of a first trimester twin pregnancy...

My doctor was concerned when mine raised up to 2.97 from 2.6, I would say talk to your doctor/ midwife!
  • @jilldonnell First, it never hurts to mention anything to your midwife if you're concerned. But I would try not to worry about that. Normal range for TSH is 0.4 - 4.5, but different labs have different reference ranges. There are absolutely consequences to treating a patient with thyroid supplements that are not truly hypothyroid. These other ladies may have had their hypothyroidism diagnosed previously with an abnormal TSH followed by a full thyroid panel. In that case, their doctors want to keep tighter control over their TSH to prevent pregnancy complications. Or their doctors may have chosen to be aggressive with treatment because they have a past history of loss. Either way, try not to compare your bloodwork to theirs -- every case is different. Your healthcare providers are trained to interpret your lab results in relation to your specific case.
