Baby on boat

We are heading on an end of the summer vacation with our family. Everyone has mixed opinions on whether or not we should take the baby along on a slow boat ride. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with it or not! I want to be ok with it but the thought of him ever going overboard (extremely unlikely) is terrifying! The water is very calm and I don't see why anything would go wrong but it still worries me.

Has anyone taken their baby on a boat? If so, do you have recommendations for a good life jacket. All of the ones I have seen are sized as an infant under 30 lbs. He will be 8 weeks at the time. Not sure if these are appropriate for him or not.

Thank you!

Re: Baby on boat

  • We are taking our LO on a Rhine river tour in Germany at around 9 weeks. My only expectation is that they supply an infant life vest. Your LO may hate wearing it, but I think that's the only option unless you purchase some other flotation device in your own.

  • We won't. My husband has a small boat he built that my 2 year old hasn't been on yet. We wanted to take him this summer but it just didn't happen. DH was joking about taking the whole family this weekend and I said absolutely not. I'm not comfortable with my newborn being on a boat, life jacket or not. We will probably take him next summer.

  • Personally, I wouldnt
  • We went on my dads sailboat when DD was 2 weeks old. It was very calm, she was fine. We plan to go again this weekend.
  • The coast guard weight guideline is 18lbs, that's what we have always abided by.
  • Your baby should not ride on a boat – including rowboats, kayaks, motorboats, and sailboats – until he weighs at least 18 pounds and can wear a snug-fitting personal flotation device (PFD), according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

you may want to call ahead and make sure they have infant life jackets. It's a nonstandard size, so they may need time to prepare.
