3rd Trimester

Stretch Marks

I am just looking for a little reassurance. This is my first pregnancy and I am feeling really self conscious about my stretch marks. When they first showed up I was ok with it. I knew there was a good chance I would get them and I was resigned to it. But now they just keep spreading and spreading. I have seen moms with stretch marks before and I have never seen anyone with as much as I have. I have some friends who are moms who asked me if I wanted to go to the pool with them today, and I made excuses because I feel like none of them will have as much stretch marks as me and I will stand out. Its worst front and center, on the front of my bump, right under my belly button. Its impossible to miss. And then it spreads all across the front and around the sides, almost to my back. I also have some on my breasts but luckily those are hidden.

So I am just wondering how common this is. Is it more common than I thought and will seem normal if anyone sees it?

Re: Stretch Marks

  • All of mine have gone away. With my first pregnancy, I gained a lot of weight (good weight - I started out around 99lbs and pretty unhealthy.) I moisturized by belly every other day and avoided marks there, but ended up with dark ugly stretchmarks all over my booty! They went away within a month after birth. With my 2nd, I only got a few on my sides, right above the waist of my pants, and they went away shortly after birth too.

THIS time, the boy is the HULK and he's huge, and I have these horizontal stretchmarks above my belly button plus the ones on my side just like my 2nd pregnancy. I'm hoping they'll go away too. I'm fairly certain they will - most ladies I've heard from say theirs go away.

And if they don't go away, they're just battle scars. ;) No one's going to care.

Oh don't worry!!  I have a few friends who ended up with them EVERYWHERE!!  One got them on her boobs, all over her entire stomach, hips, thighs and butt.  And the poor girl didn't even gain a ton of weight or anything.

And definitely don't hide or turn down a pool invite (no gravity sounds amazing right now)!  To be completely honest, yours are going to stand out from theirs, simply because theirs have had time to fade and yours haven't yet.  But they know that and won't judge you for it.

Mine are all over the bottom of my bump and starting to creep up past my belly button, but I went to a pool at my friend's with my bikini on, and he and all of his friends were a little startled (they're all sans kiddos) and asked if they hurt.  I laughed and just told them it was the price of admission for fitting a watermelon-sized human under my skin.  A few gave me a high-five, and it was the end of the conversation.

Any kind of scars just tell a story, and the one of your first little human is pretty bad-ass.  So chip up, buttercup!  You're still gorgeous with all of those stretch marks!

I have heard of them called battle scars before, I although I dont get that mentality. I have heard that stretch marks fade in colour, but I have never heard that they can go away. That would make me very happy. Its also good to know that it could be a lot worse. Although if anyone ever acted surprised by them, even if they didnt mean to be mean, I would probably cry. I will definitely avoid swimming with anyone who doesn't know better. Thanks for the input.

  • I call them my "mommy stripes" - DH was so concerned when they showed up (he thought that they looked painful and has asked if they will go away). I get that sometimes it can be hard to love the changes in your body brought on by pregnancy but the only thing you can do is roll with it. Stretch marks are EXTREMELY common among moms (though the angry red color will eventually fade) - nobody who has been pregnant before should even bat an eyelash. If you're really self conscious about it, rock a one piece (bonus points if you opt for a halter style with a deep V to show off your more ample rack).

Tiger Stripes as I like to call them! I stretched at an alarming rate during my second trimester - stomach, sides, inner and outer thighs (basically everywhere). I found that consistently moisturizing with palmers and the spray Vaseline lotion (cocoa butter) really helped.

I creamed regularly. Everyday at first and then when I got bigger twice a day. Clearly didnt help. Started around 29 weeks for me. I started at a healthy weight and have gained 25 lbs so far, which is normal from what I understand.

Everybody is different. With my first pregnancy I had them all over my belly and my breasts, arms and thighs. It has been almost 7 years since my first pregnancy so they are no where near as noticeable. This time around I have barely gotten any just little add-ons to the pre-existing ones.

Also creams do not work for everyone as I used lotions the first time and this time. Also the people who get them but they disappear are lucky. From what I have read once they turn white they aren't going anywhere.

  • I have read that creams/lotions really don't do much - whether or not you get stretch marks may be hereditary, or dependent on how quickly you grew.  They will fade over time.  I didn't get any with my first, and don't have any with this one yet... but I've got terrible spider veins all over my legs!  I think everybody gets at least one undesirable side effect from pregnancy, so take comfort in knowing you're not alone.

  • Why can't you just wear a tankini? I bought a maternity one the other day on sale at kohls Bc I felt weird in a bikini with my big bump and sticking out belly button. I don't have stretch marks (yet) but if I did I totally would have got one for that reason. Although it's nice to think people won't stare and comment in their head, it's not realistic and I'd rather not stir it up. If you don't care what people think though than good for you!

I swear I wrote this! My first stretch marks were on my inner thighs and I was okay with that. And then I noticed a tiny one on my butt...still mostly okay with it. And then there was the day that I noticed them all across my butt, down my thighs, behind and beside my knees, my hips and my belly.....I cried! My husband was and still is supportive but the stripes across my butt still really bug me. Hopefully they fade and I hope yours fade too
  • My stretch marks are awful, ftm also. It's genetics whether you get them or not for the most part. I don't have a photoshoot worthy baby bump but my daughters worth it. Marks fade and it's just proof you carried a beautiful baby don't worry about it. Anyone who judges a mom for having stretch marks is sick. Wear your stripes with pride
