  Seeing as how he's only 3 days old and breastfed for 5 minutes, he was probably very hungry.

  
  

  Newborns will typically take 30-45 minutes to nurse in the beginning and as time goes on, they become more efficient.  So if he only fed for 5 minutes, I'd be inclined to say you should have nursed him longer.

  I struggled breastfeeding my first child and he cried constantly because he was hungry.

  I'm new to this and breastfeeding has been so difficult for me I don't know why....my husband had to even go buy me a pump which I thought was going really well... But you guys are right I wasn't giving him enough and he was just hungry. How many ounces should he be eating every 3 hours?

  Per day, they should average about 28-35oz.  But some babies take more and some babies take less.

  
  

  Just keep offering him the breast whenever he shows signs of hunger and let him nurse as long as he wants.  Breastfed babies will pull off the boob or fall asleep when they are done.  The more he nurses, the more milk you will make.

  Maybe check with your pediatrician on this one since their recommendations may vary.  I exclusively pump, and at my DS' two-month check-up last week, his doc said 25-30 ounces for my 14 pound chubbo. 

  
  

  Also, if you're pumping, keep in mind that your LO is WAY more effective at getting milk out, so don't worry and think that what you pump is all he can get from you when breastfeeding.  Good luck!

  At only 6 days old 28-35 ounces is ridiculous. Average for an exclusively breastfed baby is only 25 ounces with a range of 19-30 ounces for months 1-6 before starting solids. Formula fed babies (even partially) will often be higher. A 6 day olds stomach is only about 1.5-2 oz max, so aim for 1.5-2 oz per feeding 10-12 times a day. Even when feeding pumped milk you should be watching baby not the clock and feeding on cues as much as possible. You should aim for every 2-3 hours during the day and 3 at night aside from one 4 hour stretch till baby regains birthweight. Read up on exclusively pumping on kellymom.com.
