Baby Poop Green and How many ounces at 2 1/2 months

So my baby did not have a bowel movement for 4 straight days. Gave him some black karo syrup (per doctor instructions) and he had 2 bowel movements. They were pastely like and the second BM had green looking lumps in it. It also smelled differently than his regular poop. His next BM was Monday at daycare and they it was green, not pastely (they said it looked like breast milk poop, except for green). Anyone else experiencing green poop, I'm wondering if its from the karo syrup.

HOw many ounces are you babies drinking. My baby will be 3 months next week and he started drinking 5 ounces at daycare every 3-4 hours. They often say that he is hungry afterwards, so they recommended trying 6 oz, the dr said it was ok if he doesn't spit up, so we are trying that. I was just thinking 6 oz is a bit too much for his age. What are your thoughts?

  • My son's poop was green and seedy then transitioned to yellow and seedy. Pedi said he wasn't getting the hine milk when it was green.

  • It's very normal for breastfed babies to go up to a week without poopig at this stage. They are getting more efficient at digesting your milk.
6 oz of BM is too much for a BF baby. BM changes with your baby's needs so they should only take 3-4 oz every feeding. Look up kellymom.com and there is awesome info to give to caregivers about bottle feeding a breastfed baby.
  • If your LO is feeding on demand roughly 6-7 times a day then 5-6 oz is okay. The longer they go without Milk the more they will appear to eat. Track your babies intake and it should average as per the kellymom article (brown 19-30 oz a day).

The green poop signals a hindmilk and foremilk imbalance. Your LO is not taking enough hindmilk when either BF (not staying on boob long enough or not sucking powerfully). If you pump, pump longer than 15 each boob so that you get the hindmilk. Your milk should be bluish on bottom, creamy in middle, and thick paste on top. A layer effect once cooled in fridge or standing out a couple hours at room temp after a pump session.
  • I dealt with green poop shortly after my milk came in. I cut dairy and it resolved in 24 hours. I was eating a lot of dairy at the time. Now I'm back on but am only having it in moderation (1-2 servings/day) and DD is fine.

Foremilk/hindmilk imbalance is usually green stool that is either frothy or stringy. In my case it was thick and very dark green, almost black stool.
