I think I might have a UTI!!

edited August 2015 in March 2016 Moms
I am a first time mom. This afternoon I started needing to pee every five seconds. I can't see my doctor until tomorrow. Any suggestions? Should I be worried about the baby?

Re: I think I might have a UTI!!

  • Call your OB. I got one in early pregnancy last time and didn't realize til they did the usual urine check. I forget what they prescribed me.

  • Great, thank you!!! I am only 8 weeks along and everything is so new to me!
  • If you just can't make it until tomorrow my ob told me it's safe to buy AZO. It's an over-the-counter urinary relief type of tablet. Hope you get some relief because uti's can be a real pain!

  • Call your OB. I had one discovered in routine urine during my last pregnancy and was on antibiotics. I hear this is very common during pregnancy.
  • Good to know that it is a common thing during pregnancy! I will call my OB in the morning.
  • People have always suggested cranbury juice for some relief last time I had one. Not sure if it works, but it can't hurt.

  • I get them all the time, I don't even get symptoms any more I'm lucky if they're caught before it becomes a kidney infection. Actually have a script I have to go pick up. No big deal some antibiotics will help. Drink a lot of water and cranberry juice (less sugar the better) helps clear it out. And the azo tablets help a ton. If it's painful they can get you a pain relief script too :)
  • If you take the Azo, don't forget a panty liner. Hope you're able to see the doctor for some relief tomorrow. :)
  • I used to get UTIs with my pregnancies - like I was on antibiotics for 4m with my first, and 2m with my second, until I just stopped taking them bc they weren't helping. With my third pregnancy my friend suggested I take a decent probiotic and helped me find these (they are in the refrigerated section of the pharmacy at Publix, but I'm sure you can find a good one at a health shop), and the one I was getting then resolved and I haven't had one since. Taking them again and no signs of any problems! *SO* worth the purchase!!!!

  • My old OB told me that I couldn't take Azo while pregnant, but I never followed up or asked my new OB since I found the probies.

  • Unsweetened cranberry juice and LOTS of water. Avoid anything sugary if possible. NO POP/SODA......it only makes it worse.

Warning: Unsweetened cranberry juice isn't very pleasant.....I either hold my breath and chug it, or dilute it with some ice water. But it works like a charm at relieving symptoms until you can get into your doctor.

  • Definitely go in before it turns into a kidney infection.  Yes they are common during pregnancy and they can be very bad news if you go long enough.  I had to go through several antibiotics with one with DS2 because we could not get rid of it.  A "cure" was juicing cranberries with green apples - enough for several large glasses.  It tastes horrible but it knocked it out.  And yes, don't get the cranberry cocktail - simply cranberry or an organic unsweetened one will be good.  You can also get cranberry pills that don't have any sugar.  Good luck.
