Maternity navel ring - worth it?

I am a FTM and I have a navel ring (have had it for almost 20 years).  I am 32 weeks, and so far, my normal navel ring has not bothered me.  (My bellow button, while getting shallow, has not "popped').  I have seen several maternity navel rings on Amazon (basically, long, flexible barbells) and I was wondering, from more experienced moms who kept their navel rings post-baby, is it worth it to get a maternity navel ring?   Did you keep your navel ring in during labor?  When did you remove it?  (I am very concerned about trying to remove my current navel ring while having contractions as I have not taken the ring out in over 10 years.  I think I will need a tool to open the actual ring.)

Thanks for your advice!

Re: Maternity navel ring - worth it?

  • I couldn't keep mine in? For some reason it got so infected and now I have the ugliest scar from stretching! My friend kept hers in the whole time she just got the long bar and replaced it when it got real tight. Good luck!

  • I don't have a navel piercing so I can't directly offer any advice on that but I would think that you would have to remove all jewelry if you required a C-section for delivery. I had to remove my earring studs for surgery...with a navel ring being so close to the incision site, I would think that you would have to take it out to prep for surgery - might be a good idea to remove it well in advance, just in case.

  • I have never had a maternity ring, I took mine out when pregnant with my first andi have the ugliest stretched out scar that didn't go away after baby.

I had a girlfriend that left hers in and when her belly button popped her belly ring popped out too.
  • I recommend the pregnancy one. I know some Piercing Pagoda's have them at the mall (if yours has one). I ordered mine for this pregnancy from bellycandy.com and I love it. I have had one for all three of my pregnancies and prefer it because I find as the bigger my belly gets the metal one tends to irritate the skin. Also if you put in the plastic one and for some reason things go wrong in labor it is just plastic, they can cut it if the necessity is there (not typical but thats part of my way of thinking). I've heard horror stories of people leaving in the metal bar and as the belly stretches out it pushes so hard on the metal one that it actually has ripped out and with the plastic it just flexes with your belly so that isn't an issue that I'm aware of.

My belly button is pierced twice, one on top and one on bottom. I've had it pierced for 18 years. The bottom one is still fine with its regular jewelry so far at 30weeks but the top one got way too tight (I use curved barbells) so around 28 weeks I switched to a flexible maternity barbell and I wish I'd done it at 26 weeks! So much more comfortable! I have no idea if I'll be able to keep them in the whole pregnancy but I sure hope so.
I too was wondering if we'd have to take them out for labor and delivery. I can think of reasons why yes we would and no we wouldn't. I'll be checking back here to see what any BTDT moms have to say about it.

I've never taken mine out for delivery. With my firs the doctor looked at it and asked what it was because he hadn't seen one before (2007 so I guess the maternity belly ring was a new thing then) and I explained it to him and asked if I needed it removed and he said because it was plastic it didn't pose any risk because they could remove it easily if needed (in other words if they needed it removed they could just cut it and it wouldn't take any time to do that). With my daughter I didn't ask and they saw it but didn't care. Already with this pregnancy my doctor has mentioned it and how the plastic is a god idea and told the student that was with her that it is better to have that one for belly purposes but didn't mention anything about delivery while they were in the room. I don't intend to take it out this time unless they ask me to but I doubt they will.
  • I never used a maternity ring with either of my pregnancies, I have a few but never bothered with them, I took mine out about a month ago cause mine kept getting pulled on my shirt and infected !

I had a navel ring for years but took mine out when I was starting to show. I just thought it would be easier. I haven't missed it.
  • I bought the pregnancy bar and only had it in for a month and it was irritating me also. I've gone without anything for the past few months now. I'm 32 weeks and so far no scaring or stretch marks or anything around the hole. It actually feels a lot better with nothing. Both the hole area and my belly button have just gone flat. I look like I have just two tiny slits where my belly button should be and where my hole is. I had the ring in for 20 years also and needed plyers to get it open.
  • I took mine out as soon as I found out I was pregnant. The skin that the ring goes through stretches and hurts really really bad sometimes. I'm glad I took it out.
