High Risk Mommas

I just found out I am high risk due to having SSA antibodies which can cause a fetal heart block. I have to be monitored every week starting at 16 weeks, in addition to my normal appointments. This is my first baby so feeling extra stressed.

If you are high rrisk, are you telling work? How do you tell them? I'm a little nervous to tell work how many appointments I will be out for. Have you worked out a work from home schedule for additional rest (if you're not on bed rest)?

Re: High Risk Mommas

  • My doctor doesn't consider me high risk even though I'm AMA. I would tell your employer that an issue with your pregnancy has come to light and you'll be having to visit the doctor more often, but that you will try to schedule your appointments where it doesn't interfere with your job.

    Good luck!

  • I've yet to see whether I am high risk this time. I'm not right off the bat, it depends on where my placenta is, fluid levels and whether I have GD. I only work part time Wednesday to Friday but in worried because last time my high risk consultant only does her clinic in a Thursday. I'm in a new job and they're already annoyed that I got pregnant 3 months in!!

  • I am high risk but it's because I am pregnant with twins in a back to back pregnancy. I see a high risk specialist along with my Ob and the number of appointments I have scheduled is crazy! But I am glad that they will be monitoring everything closely.

  • I am also high risk, due to AMA (I'm 37) and a uterine rupture with my last pregnancy... which was 10 years ago! Anyone else dealing with pregnancy after uterine rupture?
  • I won't know for sure if I'm high risk again until later in pregnancy probably. Last time I started with hypertension then ended up with pre e and IUGR. I stay at home with my daughter now and do in home daycare so it's really hard to schedule appointments. I think I'm going to tell the mother of the girl I watch that it could come up again without warning and she should start looking for someone else. I would feel bad not giving her notice then all the sudden having to go to the doctor three times a week and her having to find backup so often.

  • I'm high-risk because of my severe Crohn's disease, but I work for family so it's way different.

Does FMLA help cover additional appointments like that?

  • Hi there. Finally pregnant after 4 years of IF and 2 Ivf cycles. I've had 4 sch this pregnancy with 2 major bleeding episodes (it was terrifying). Im still bleeding a 14 weeks. I'm not on total bed rest but very restricted. I was so scared everyday. I read so much online that I was always worried that I'd have a missed m/c or 1,000 other awful things. I was a mess. At 13 weeks I did end up telling everyone I was preggers :). I read a forum where a woman said that she had decided that she needed to start enjoying her pregnancy no matter how long it lasted and to stop living in fear. That's the only reason I decided it was time. It has become exciting and enjoyable now that it's out there. If something were to happen I would be heartbroken but anything could happen at anytime in your pregnancy and I wasn't going to hide it for 9 months. Dont get me wrong, I still get scared at times, but I get to share the happy moments with friends and family . Its a personal decision for everyone to decide when they are ready to tell people but I hope my story helps. luckily i work with my husband so telling my employer was not an issue I wish I had better advice on that for you but I don't have any experience with it. Best of luck and enjoy this amazing time in your life!
  • Hello all. I have also been categorized High Risk. However, mine is due to two previous miscarriages back to back. I also had a hematoma during the 6th week of this pregnancy, which thank God its been resolved/absorbed. As far as telling work, I told them immediately after the doctor put me on light duty. Being that it was my third pregnancy, I knew I was gona take it easy and just accept being assigned to desk duties. However, not sure how your job/employer is. I also try to plan all my appts before work or on days off. I hope things workout for you. I know its easier said than done, but try not to stress. You and baby come first! Best of Luck to all!!
  • I'm what my doctor is calling moderate risk. I think it's to calm my fears honestly, but it worked. I have uterine didelphis or a complete separate uterus (never determined for sure). In basic terms I have two uteruses, crevixes, and everything. Now that I have passed the risk of miscarriage (14 weeks) I know have to be monitored ever 2-3 weeks for cervical incompetence and preterm labor. I will also have to have a c section. I try not to stress and take it day by day it helps that I feel like I'm in good hands. Best of luck to all the other high risk mommies. My thoughts are with you.

I to am high risk for several reasons. I have a shorten incompetent cervix, hypothyroid, twin pregnancy and insulin resistance. Their main concern at the moment is my cervix being able to go carry the weight of the babies without my cervix giving out and me going into labor early or miscarrying. Because of this I cannot take walks or exercise I was told to even limit myself to lite housekeeping. My thyroid isn't much of the concern since it is being monitored and medication adjusted as needed. I will be 16 weeks on Monday and we haven't yet shared the news with our family. (My previous miscarriage and 2nd premature labor has discouraged me from doing so).
  • I was out on bedrest while pregnant with my twins due to short and funneling cervix beginning around 18 weeks.

FMLA only approved me for 8 weeks. Luckily my job was willing to work with me. I also had weekly ultrasounds so having to miss work that often wouldn't have worked out anyway given I managed retail at the time and the schedule was not flexible.

I think it's important to be upfront and honest with your boss and let them know that this wasn't in the plans for you, you're very nervous yet your job still remains a priority to you and you will do your best to keep your commitment to the company.

  • I'm high risk due to an autoimmune disease, which means I have to see an endocrinologist who specializes in managing thyroid autoimmune diseases during pregnancy, as well as my OBGYN, so I have had basically, double the dr appointments since the beginning.  I told my boss about my pregnancy and the high risk factor right after the 8 week ultrasound, just because of all of the appointments.  Luckily, she's been very understanding.  I think if you're up front about it, your supervisors will be flexible because, after all, its your health and your baby's health on the line and you can't mess around with that!  :)
