20 week screen 2 soft indicators

Hi ladies, first time posting...

I didn't have the genetic testing/quad screening done early on.

Just had my 20 week and everything is fabulous but...

My doctor said there are two cysts on top of my baby's head. These are two soft indicators for downs (and when I googled it there was mention of Trisomy18). My doctor was very reassuring and many online forums seemed to be positive as well stating that they had the same thing and their baby is healthy happy and without downs. My doctor says they can disappear by 24-28 weeks but if they don't then we go to a specialist. :/ I am still worrying though. I'm trying not to but as a mom, you know it's hard.

Needing prayers, positive words, and positive stories that relate if you have any.

My husband and I haven't told anyone so this is my outlet for support as of now.

  • I don't have any experience with this but my thoughts and prayers are with you

  • I don't have any experience with this but there have been several posters who had one-two soft markers that later resolved. You can try searching "soft markers" on the board for more stories and results. Thinkingn about you!

  • I had a different soft marker at the 20-wk (echogenic intracardiac focus). I know it's so hard not to worry, but I've spent the first couple of days after the results googling obsessively, and it seems like improvements in technology have made it easier to spot soft markers, and they are often a normal variant in children without any chromosomal issues. Do you have a level II US scheduled or a follow-up? Will they offer you a blood test like Harmony? In the interim, try to stay positive. I'll be sending positive thoughts your way!
  • If you can get a blood test, it will give you more peace of mind while you wait. I'm sorry you are going through this. The waiting is the hardest part. Prayers for you and your baby!

  • During my anatomy scan they also found small cysts in baby's head. I was told it was a soft marker for trisomy 18 but since we saw baby with open hands and moving around we shouldn't worry too much (since clenched fists is another big indicator according to the doctor). I followed up with the blood work checking for downs/trisomy 18/etc. (sorry I can't remember what they actually called it) and haven't heard back yet but they told me to assume good results if I don't hear back. I have another ultrasound on Monday so hopefully they will have disappeared.

I had this as well. My tech called them "choroid plexus cysts" which are a soft marker for Trisomy 18. When they are by themselves, with no other marker, it's just a matter of your baby's spinal fluid development. What I was told happens is that the choroid plexus is still developing at the same time that the spinal fluid is being created. Because there's more spinal fluid than area in the choroid plexus and in the baby's spine to hold it, sometimes it creates little cysts. It's common, even my cousin had them during his ultrasound and he has absolutely no symptoms of DNS or Trisomy 18. Like your doctor said, they usually disappear around 24 to 28 weeks, when the choroid plexus is better developed. Unless your doctor is concerned and sends you for another ultrasound or a blood test, I wouldn't worry about it. Thinking of you and your LO!

  • Bilateral chordid plexus cysts..... That was our marker with our last child. Try not to google too much.... Our guy turns one this week and although he is very small for his age he is developmentally fine! You can look at another reply I made to a poster who had a genetic marker if you click on my username to hear more details. Oh and he had an mri not too long ago and the neuro said that his brain looked great!

  • It's very very normal! Many babies have them at 18-20 weeks and they normally resolve. They need to tell you about them, but if that's the only marker I would not worry. It's hard not to though!
  • I found out at my 20 week scan that my baby has a choroid plexus cyst as well. I am a HUGE worrier and googling can get the best of me. But the ultrasound tech and the doctor both reassured my husband and I that they are common and when they are found in isolation (without any other markers or problems) then they are not concerned. (This was the case with our baby). The ultrasound tech said even her son had them and he is a healthy 20 year old! She told me she hates even having to tell people about them because they cause such worry in people when in reality, they are such a non-issue.

To be honest, I felt like my doctor blew the whole thing off. She said the cysts usually resolve themselves and go away by 25 weeks or so. My husband told me that if our doctor isn't worried, then we shouldn't worry. So try to take that same advice!! I know it's easier said than done but worrying isn't good for your little one!! And chances are, she is 100% healthy and perfect!!
  • Same here... My doctor said it is absolutely nothing to worry about, only if there were more markers. She said something like 1/8 women have a soft maker and 1/500 have an issue with it. She said she spends too much of her time calming worried new moms, since it is almost never an issue.
