Most important to buy on list...

So, as October approaches, I've come to realize that there are three major things on our "to buy list" that we still have not gotten. A crib, a car seat, and a rocking chair. We are second time parents, but it feels like the first time since we were 18 our first go around and our DD is now 5.

My DH doesn't think it is necessary to buy a crib yet, which is true, we do have a bassinet. I more just want everything now so its there, but I know it can wait. A rocking chair is again, something I really want, but can wait. We had one with our first but it was a cheap one and the back of it is now broken. I just really wanted a new one! A car seat, yes, we should have that one prepared as soon as possible because well, how else are we going to get the baby home! But my DH wants to get an all in one car seat that is supposes to go from 4lbs to 110lbs. But I don't think I have ever seen anyone get one of these for a newborn. So yes, the car seat is our number one priority and I thought I knew what we were going to get but my DH threw in this little wrench. Should I get an infant carrier and this all in one car seat? I have no idea. It seems like a silly question ,but its not one I've had to wonder about before.

Anyone else struggling with order of buying big ticket items or even struggling with what kind of big ticket item is really needed?

  • Personally I'm getting an infant seat first. I also have a 5year old and I think it'll make going out to the grocery store easier. (it gets cold here in the winter so throwing a blanket over the car seat before running into the store/car is easier than taking him out and into a carrier).
That also free a hand for me to hold DD's while walking through parking lots. Pretty much all personal preference.
Another thought is if you have multiple cars. Buying an extra base is cheaper than having a car seats. :)

  • I used a convertible car seat with my first and I will with my second. It saves a lot of money and it's no big deal taking them out of it to transfer them to a carrier or stroller.
  • PS I love in Canada and I'm still not swayed by the cold argument. Money talks for me. Ever so slightly less convenient? Maybe. But I also don't have to physically carry a car seat around anywhere like I saw so many mums doing.
  • We have nothing for this kiddo except for a 3 pack of Gerber onsies (literally). This is our third, but we got rid of everything itty bitty baby after my daughter was done with it because we were 95%sure we were done. I am not too concerned because babies don't need a lot when they are born and if the baby comes early, they will likely be in the NICU so I will have a few days to pick things up.

The biggest thing we will need is new car seats for the baby and the big kids so we can fit three across in our car. I already know which ones I want, I am just waiting for a price I like.

We will be going with an infant seat because I like that I can carry it around. With 2 other kids to be working with I am anticipating many car seat naps and I don't want to have to wake them up if I don't have to. When my daughter was two weeks old I used just a convertible seat because I had some kidney issues and wasn't supposed to be lifting anything heavier than my 7 lb newborn. I switched cars with DH for a couple of weeks and we had a convertible one in his car. It was fine, but I did feel like she was much more supported in the infant seat and I did miss the convenience of being able to pull the whole seat out.

If you do choose to go without an infant seat, check with your hospitals policies about leaving because some actually say they require an infant seat. There usually are ways around this, but they take a little more time than just showing the nurse the infant seat so it might be a good idea to be aware of what needs to be done before you are discharged.
  • Are you planning to wear your baby? Or do you think you'll primarily use a stroller for outings? If you're going to use a carrier or wrap most of the time to carry the baby, you could skip the infant seat entirely and just get a convertible. However, if that's not your plan, for at least the first 6-9 months, you'll probably want the infant seat/carrier.

  • I got the evenflo convertible seat on my registry that either goes from 4 or 5 lbs to 100ish. But we also got an infant seat. We plan to put the convertible in my hubby's car for now since there won't be a ton of riding in that one and I'll use the infant seat. I've heard most seats start at 5 lbs which I think mine does, so I am a little worried if my baby is under that (been measuring on small side) they won't let us leave the hospital until we get a special one. Guess we will just have to see. Agree the crib can wait but I would get a car seat ASAP!
  • Thanks ladies. I don't know that we would ho early be going many places so I felt it a bit silly to get two seats. @Nukke we are pretty hardy so the cold doesn't bother us, so the cold argument doesn't sway me either honestly. My DD would get sweaty in her infant carrier and she was born in a blizzard.

@npba3027 that is a good question. My previous hospital did check out your gear before they let you leave. We are going to a new one this time around, so good idea on checking with what the hospital will require.

@MamaOwl15 I am planning on wearing baby most of the time. So again, the I can't carrier, not a big deal in that case.

It may be more convenient to have both so I have the option but if we get the all in one seat, I dont really wanna waste money on another seat just for the convenience. As long as baby is safe in the car/truck, that's what matters most.

We chose the infant carriers partially because we're having twins and it'll take a lot less time to pop them in and out of the car that way! Also because the infant carriers snap right into the stroller we chose, and we probably won't be baby-wearing much since there's two!
  • I was struck with this carseat dilemma we ended up getting an infant , and converting seat. The carrier will make the winter SO much easier for us here in New England. If the baby is sleeping just carry her right in. The converting seats don't remove from the base then you need to wake up baby.

Anyone else concerned about how incredibly dirty a car seat would get by the time the kid is 110 lbs if it started using it when the kid was a newborn? That's really the thing that swayed me away from one of those all in ones. Just a thought.

To answer your original question, just get a car seat and the other stuff really can wait. Best of luck!
  • We got the chicco nextfit zip convertible carseat. It goes from 5-65 lbs. DH and I figured we could save a couple hundred by getting just the one that will be useful for years. Been reading also that babies shouldn't really spend more than 1-2 hours in their carseats as this can cause strain in their spines. So I don't mind taking her out of her carseat when we get to our destination. Our stroller comes with a bassinet which is better for her little developing body. As for the dirt and grime, this carseat boasts of an easy to remove and easy to clean padding so we're not worried about that either.

Lots of convertible seats have removable and washable covers. I washed mine just two weeks ago and it looks brand new!

This is my exact concern, and why I'm not an advocate for the 3 n 1 and 4 n 1 car seats out there.

DD has had her convertible since 10 months. She's now 4. And while yes, the cover is removable and washable, the plastic, the straps, and the buckle is not. It's getting stiffer and more difficult to unbuckle her because she used to get car sick all over her car seat. Plus, after washing the cover all the time, the seams have begun to fray and its coming apart. So now she's 4, and I either got to deal with the convertible a little longer until she's big enough for a booster, or bite the bullet and spend another $150 on a convertible - to booster car seat.

For DS, we purchased the infant seat, that we will use till 35 pounds or he's too tall. Then he will get a convertible that will hopefully last till he's at least 4, like DD's did.

  • I was lucky enough to have a coworker give me her infant car seat. So I registered for a convertible car seat. The Graco Milestones.
  • We were lucky and got most of our big stuff at our first shower, and we have 2 showers to go. We really need cloth diapers and the baby monitor and then the crib/mattress. The crib isn't a big one for us either since we have a bassinett! We've even gotten the highchair and all the bedding, mattress pads and sheets for the crib already!
