FTM confusion - what does a newborn sleep in?!

I registered for and got a miracle blanket and halo swaddler, do they sleep in that? And only that? Climate wise, we're talking Fall in Los Angeles so cool but not cold. I've seen people refer to "sleepers", but is that more for when it's cold? I'm so lost here. What's wrong with having them sleep in a onesie? So confused!

Re: FTM confusion - what does a newborn sleep in?!

  • I usually had mine sleep in a "sleeper".. They have the feet and long sleeves.... And when they were really little i swaddled them.. As they got bigger and weren't swaddled anymore, I put them in a sleep sac and sleeper. I live in Florida.. So obviously it's not cold here.. But the ac runs constantly and it seemed the best wAy to keep them cozy.
  • I usually do a sleeper & swaddle with a blanket at first. When they get bigger & don't stay swaddled then might put a onsie under the sleeper. But it's better to keep them a little cooler rather than roasting hot. If it's warm & cozy in the house you could definately do just a onesie with a swaddle blanket. Trust your judgment you'll be just fine :)

  • Thank you @lindscaples and @ajhellmuth, and now follow up dumb question. I don't see a lot of newborn things labeled "sleepers", so is a sleeper just any long sleeve onesie with feet? Or different. For example I was looking on buy buy baby and it looked like the things labeled sleepers/pjs started sizing at 12+ months. ??

They are usually called sleep and plays in the smaller sizes. They have a zipper or snaps from the toes all the way to the neck and make diaper changes easier.

  • I did the same with mine. I've always been told whatever you are comfortable wearing add a layer for a newborn. ..
  • Aha! Thanks guys :-h
  • I hear people say they love sleep sacks!

We are also in LA and DD was born in winter. Last time we did cotton footie pjs (aka sleep and play or sleepers) and double swaddled her. One muslin swaddle and one flannel swaddle. DD was a wriggler but loved being swaddled so one swaddle wasn't enough. She would just break out and wake herself up. Since we used two swaddle layers we needed something lighter weight underneath, hence the cotton rather than fleece pjs. For the first weeks she also slept with a light cotton hat.

  • We put DS in footed pj's and a miracle blanket for the first 4 months. however, some babies get hot and I could see just using a short or long sleeved onesie or no clothes under the swaddle depending on how warm it is in the room.

I used to be scared DS was too cold because his cheeks seemed chilly to touch, but I soon learned that if his neck and chest area felt warm, he was perfectly fine. We keep our house really cold.

Since 4-5 months, DS has slept in pj's and a regular halo sleep sack. He's 2.5 and I dread the day he grows out of his sleep sack because he hates blankets and it keeps him warm at night.

  • I'm a ftm as well but my MIL bought some gowns for my LO. She said that's all her babies slept in cause it was so much easier to change diapers cause you don't have to snap or zip anything. I also have some swaddlers cause we keep in pretty cold in our house at night.
  • You might want to try a few different options for sleepwear. In FL, a onesie under a swaddle wrap or sleep sac might be enough.

But you may find that your baby doesn't like to be swaddled (my son hated it). I put him in a sleep n play (sleeper) or a gown, though I generally preferred sleepers for him.

However, like PPs have said, the advantage to gowns is that you don't have to undo snaps or zippers to change a diaper at 3 am!

  • So glad I asked, this is all really helpful. I think a few different options sounds smart. Thanks!
