A Rested Baby or an Entertained Toddler?

My 12 week old DD is very gassy and can often take an hour or more to settle enough so I can move her to sleep in her bed. I know she really needs rest, but if I keep on trying for the nap, my toddler doesn't get out to do anything. If I give up on the nap and decide to go somewhere so my toddler can have fun, baby will likely get overtired and fussy as she doesn't fall asleep in the stroller or ergo. What is the best choice?

  • I think it depends on the day and where you can fit an outing in. I personally would push the nap then try to go do something right when baby wakes up. Gotta get creative!

  • FWIW, the teacher of our sleep class said the most important nap of the day to protect is the morning one.  Anything else is fine if she's getting little cat naps or whatever.  And if you haven't already tried, we found success with sleeping in the stroller if we cover it completely with a blanket and have the noise machine going under it.
  • Would a different type of carrier/wrap help?  I like my Boba, and I find the Lillebaby better than an Ergo.  Check out if there is a baby wearing group in your area - they usual have a loan library and you could try a few kinds to see if there's one she'll conk out in.  And, yes, agreeing with pp - my lo is a BEAR if she misses her morning nap.
  • I'm definitely going to check out the lillebaby. I am just really looking forward to the time where her digestive system is a little more mature and she isn't constantly waking up with gas etc.
