to pacify......

Hello, wondering if anyone is using a pacifier? if you are and are also exclusively breastfeeding how long did you wait before introducing the pacifier? And did your LO have any issues with breastfeeding afterwards? I am one tired mama and hoping to give DS a pacifier soon so I can save some of my sanity. Thanks for your thoughts!

Re: to pacify......

  • Introduced him to the pacifier at 1 week old. No problems breastfeeding

  • I gave her the pacifier night one at the hospital. I am a ftm and when I couldn't console her after a diaper change and breastfeeding I gave one. I breastfeed, like I mentioned above, pump so my husband can give a bottle once a day, and use a nipple sheild at times. I guess I am just lucky. She will take whatever.
  • I gave pacifier at the hospital as well! No nipple confusion. Also occasionally give him a bottle and have not had any trouble!

  • I've been holding off on using the pacifier due to the same fears. Glad to see that is working for other moms. I guess I'll give it a try also :)
  • I use a pacifier (sometimes she won't take it) and bottles and breastfeed. She doesn't have any issues with nipple confusion. We've been doing all of this since the 1st week.
  • I am a first-time mom and I caved and gave my little one a pacifier the first night home from the hospital. He is EBF is having no issues at all with alleged nipple confusion or what have you
  • I held off for the first week but started offering the pacifier after finding no other way to calm her down while on the road in her car seat. She has had no problem breastfeeding at all after that.
  • Gave it to her on day 2 lol! I EBF and haven't had problems.
  • I wanted to avoid the pacifier at all costs. I'll admit I've tried to give it to the LO a few times to soothe him, but he won't take it. It's fine by me though-no weaning him of it. He's mostly breastfeed but he gets bottles daily without any issues
  • My LO is almost two weeks and she gets a pacifier. I was so against it but after seeing a lactation consultant she advised me that it's best for her in my case. I have an oversupply of milk and that the baby maybe full from eating so quickly and efficiently, but her need to suck is not satisfied. If she's still rooting after a good feed then she may need to satisfy her suck reflex. It has helped so much giving it to her. She'd sit on one side for almost and hour. I'm not a medical professional. This is just my experience. I definitely would talk to a lactation consultant if you're worried about supply; the pacifier might mess with that. But now I'm not anti pacifier. They have the urge develop the suck reflex til about 6 months so maybe then we'll get rid of it. It's also better they use a pacifier instead of finding their thumb. Can't take that away...hope this helps.

I was put in ICU for a few days following my csection. The surgery itself ended up being 4 hours long. My daughter got both bottles and pacifiers during the times I couldn't be with her. I notice she has some trouble going back to the breast after a bottle, but usually not after the pacifier.

I read somewhere (I think in What to Expect in the First Year) that a pacifier may actually help LO BF because it strengthens her mouth. Also it is easier to wean a kid off a pacifier than his or her own fingers (which they may use to self comfort instead).
  • I had a c-section at 36w6d and my baby had to go to the NICU - he got a paci at about 10 minutes old and I didn't get to attempt to nurse until the following day. He has no problems nursing, picked it up really well at 2 days old and hasn't had any issues.

One note about it being easier to take a paci away vs fingers - if your kid is going to suck their fingers, they will do it regardless - my 2nd kid took a paci for the first 3 months of his life and then took it out himself and sucked his thumb.
  • My LO had a pacifier day 2 at the hospital, had high risk levels of jaundice so I had to pump and bottle feed, he is now 95% breastfed with a nipple shield and has no problems going from breast, to pacifier, to bottle. My pediatrician's exact words when I voiced my concerns about being afraid he would never go back to breast after the bottle were "Screw nipple confusion. He'll go back. Don't you worry!"
  • Week 1, no Issues at all with confusion. He also takes a bottle. I think he'd take anything though! I've read that pacifiers help also.

For us, we didn't want to use but it help give my breasts a rest as he was using them to sooth rather than to feed. Glad we did it and I'd do it again
  • I was hesitant too but tried it on day four as nothing seemed to soothe him and it worked wonders and still does. Hasn't affected breast feeding at all.
  • I wanted to hold off on using a pacifier because of nipple confusion blabla...i used one on the way home from the hospital...babu was fussy big time getting in her carseat and i said what the hell...i breastfeed and pump once a day (abottle at night for a big befpre bed meal). Ive never had a problem and pacifiers are gods gift to parents
  • My LO is a little over 5 weeks, I was EBF, we started adding the bottle and pacifier at 4 weeks (as I am returning to work soon). He is having a lot of trouble taking the bottle, and will only sometimes take the pacifier. He comfort nurses for hours so I wish that I had not listened to the LC, and introduced the artificial nipples earlier.
  • Introduced bottles and pacifier at 3 weeks, baby girl has no confusion with breasts, bottles or pacifiers. Mynhusband typically gives her one pumped bottle in the evening (gives me a little break from EBF) and lets my husband have some bonding time with her. It's a win-win!
  • My LO was in NICU and started taking the paci there around day 1 or 2 when he was too sick to eat in order to give him some comfort. It helped. I met with lactation once he was out of NICU and she said that with my oversupply the paci may be the best thing and it may help him soothe, since he always wants to suck. I haven't had any issues
  • STM...with our first I wanted to avoid it bc of EBF goals, but he used me as a pacifier and it ruined BF'ING for us. I was exhausted, in so much pain, bleeding and cracked nipples...it just wasn't worth it to me so we gave him a paci. But then we stopped BF and went to bottles. This time, we gave it to our 2nd son night 2 in the hospital bc I wanted to EBF again and learned from last time. Still EBF, LO doesn't take the paci as well as number 1 did but does take it to soothe at night after a feeding. No problems with latch or nipple confusion here.
  • BTW The lactation consultant recommended a soothie because of the nipple shape… And that's the kind that is on the Wubbanub!!! My 12 day old son absolutely loves his!
  • My EBF baby won't take a pacifier!  Sometimes I give her the tip of my finger to suck, which she'll do.  But pacifiers?  I've tried three different types and she spits them all out.

I am using the Soothie but my LO seems to prefer the ones I have not on the Wubbanub. Maybe he will change to like the Wubbanub as he gets older and can hold onto it more
  • My baby was introduced to the soothie after birth during his stay in the NICU. It kind of ticked me off a little because I did not want him using the pacifier so early. I am breastfeeding and pumping and he's doing very well distinguishing from the nipple types. He will be five weeks old tmrw.
  • I introduced pacifier few hours after birth at the hospital. And it's my sons best friend. It causes no confusion what so ever. I exclusively breast feed and express for bootle feeding too
  • Baby girl was in the nicu for 8 days and had the nurses introduce a pacifier day 2 and luckily she never had any nipple confusion, I also breastfeed, pump and feed and Havnt had any problems with that either. But she has a very strong suck so that probably helps as well.

My LO was also in NICU but they asked my DH permission before giving him a paci for the first time to make sure we were ok with it. This hospital is "baby/breastfeeding friendly"
  • Yeah that probably happened in my hospital too. I was stuck in my room recovering from c-section the first two days. Now that I think about it, my husband is pro-paci so he probably gave the nurses the okay to give him that lol. @ChristyM87
  • My daughter loves her wubbanub also @ecloho I gave her the soothie for the first time on the way home the hospital bc she hates the carseat! I also EBF and it hasn't caused any confusion. She usually only takes it while in the carseat or when I know she isn't hungry and just needs to suckle for a second!

I told them (again) from the operating table no pacifier after my c-section before they took him to the nursery. Lol. Today I went out and bought 2 different kinds though. When he goes through these growth spurts it just kills my nipples to let him suck for comfort. We'll see if he will evn take them though. He won't take the free nuk one we got.
