Terrible Mom Award: Cut DS' Finger :<(

Bad momma alert over here! DH is normally in charge of nails but DS woke up with a scratch on his face so I decided to "help." Took a small chunk out of DS' thumb and I am sooooooo mad at myself! He was really tired so I thought he wouldn't move but he did. And I got him good. I stopped the bleeding and washed it thoroughly. Anything else I should do? He is an avid thumb sucker so I don't really want to put on any antiseptic or ointment or even bandages if I don't need to. Considering giving him a little baby Tylenol but that is probably more to help alleviate my guilt than his pain...

  • He'll be fine!  I nicked DD's thumb the first time I tried to cut her nails, and felt like crap but she didn't even wake up, and it healed fast.  I'd skip the drugs, I'm sure it's not bothering him.  It happens!

  • Don't worry about it!! DH cut DS's finger the day after we brought him home from the hospital. He felt horrible!!! Honestly, I put a bit of breastmilk on it and put a bandaid (cut down so it was super tiny) over top. It healed up in a day or two. I think I put breastmilk on it twice. You can do that if you are worried but otherwise it should heal on its own. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get infected.
  • First round i pinched her, second round there was a bit of blood. Now I clip them to where she can still scratch :/ I try to file them daily. Thankfully she's never scratched herself, just me during nursing time.
  • DS has a big scratch on his cheek today! It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of thing if you ask me. Don't worry, it will heal!
  • I use this thing called a zoli its an electric nail file for babies.. Works great! You don't even have to worry about hitting there skin! It's was a gift but she bought it at nordstroms
  • My doctor told me just to bite them off myself after a bath. Sounds kinda gross but you can feel exactly where it needs to be cut off and it's super fast and easy
  • Totally cut my LOs finger last week cutting her nails. No need for tylenol, just cuddling & kisses makes it all better. Don't feel bad, its going to happen, and probably more than once!
  • I did the same thing when DD was about a week old. I didn't even realize I had her finger until her expression went from peaceful sleeping to painful shock. She cried for like 2 minutes, I cried for about an hour. I think it hurt me more than her.
  • I think it's a right of passage as a new mom for this to happen. Did it with my little man the 2nd time I cut his nails. Cut the corner of his thumb cause he woke up and jerked. I balled my eyes out for hurting him, I think I was more hurt than he was
  • We have all done it!!
  • I always trim my nails but at dd's 7 weeks growth spurt i didn't have time so i nicked her toe while changing her, i felt like crap but she was fine, cried for a bit but was easily consoled and it healed fairly quickly.

    Don't feel too bad
  • Don't feel bad, my mother got DS real good on his thumb when he was about a month old. She refuses to go near him with nail clippers, but he was fine!
