Poop explosion anyone?

So my little boy is nearly 5 weeks old, and starting last week he suddenly stopped pooping 3 to 5 times a day. My hubby and I were kind of panicking because everywhere I've read says your newborn should still be pooping multiple times a day. But his mood seemed fine, so I put off calling the Dr. I always expected each diaper change to be a poopy one. So after 3 days of no poop and paranoia on our parts, he literally and completely filled his entire diaper with poop. Like, it was everywhere, up his back, almost to his tummy, and even on his thighs. And he's exclusively on breastmilk so the consistency was super soft/ liquid like. I thought that it was just a one time thing, that somehow he became constipated or something (does that happen with breastfed babies?) But he hasn't gone back to pooping regularly, he explodes in his diaper every 3 to 4 days. We've noticed that the day before he finally poops, he gets super gassy and mildly fussy. But other than that he's a perfectly happy baby and doesn't appear to be in any sort of discomfort. So just wondering, any of you mamas have babies who go every couple of days like my little guy? Thanks!

  • My LO has gone through the exact same thing. When she first came home she would poop 4 to 5 times a day. Then she changed to every other day blow outs. She is now having blow outs every three to four days. Dr. Says its normal and as long as she's having bowel movements within four days she's fine. :)

  • That happened to us as well. We went from 6 or 7 poppy diapers to one every 36 hrs or so. And she fills them every time and leaks out the top, too. I guess this is normal - just their digestive system figuring out what works best for baby!
  • My son went 14 days without pooping! Yes. You read that right.
He was about 2-3 months. (He's 4 yrs now) the dr said this happens sometimes and not to worry as long as he's not in pain and is EBF. If he hadn't pooped in two weeks and was eating solids there would be more concern. We just played hot potato with him wondering who was gonna get the blow out when it happened. In the end, it was me and it was so bad he pooped MY pants too. I even took a picture of it it was so impressive.
  • Glad to know I'm not in this alone! Thank you guys!
  • We had a poop explosion yesterday. Filled an entire diaper, up the back, almost in hairline. Needless to say, we took a bath pronto!
  • Oh man! Now I am dreading the poop explosion phase!! LO is 2 weeks old & still going multiple times a day right now...thank goodness!! :-S
  • Yup my baby girl does it too...after 3 days of no poop she finally went and as I was changing her she had a blowout so bad it was projectile poop that shot out and made a mess on the floor lol
  • My LO is 2 weeks and had his first diaper explosion last night. I was amazed he did it so early! Lol. But abt a week ago, he stopped pooping almost every 3 hours and now only goes once a day. When he does go, he strains so bad. I thought it was just us but it looks as though this is normal. I guess I can stop worrying!

@corndogrobot my LO is almost 2 months and in the past 10 days she had only had 1 small poo. She is EBF with the exception of a few formula bottles (2 or 3 in that 10 days). I go back and forth from being worried to feeling like it will come eventually. I even tried a 1 oz prune juice/water mixture at the recommendation of the pediatric gastro doctor. It really didn't help. Your story makes me feel a little better!

From the first day we bough our little one home she's gone every 2-3 days. They aren't explosions though. They are bad but the nappy contains them. She's formula and breastfed (I have supply issues).

My baby poops about 3-4 times a week and my son was the same. None of the doctors was concerned and they both told me that EBF babies could poop less because they taje advantage (I'm hoping this expression is correct because I had to use google to translate) of everything that they're eating.

And every poopy diaper is an explosive diaper.
