Trying to Get Pregnant

Science behind swollen inguinal lymph nodes?

I have read in TCOYF and a few websites that you can have a swollen inguinal lymph node (between pelvis and thigh crease) around ovulation. What I cannot find is the science behind it! Curious if anyone understands why it would swell due to ovulation? I know it usually swells on the side that you ovulate, but just don't understand what makes it swell. Pretty much just curiosity at this point since it's mentioned so vaguely.

Also who else has experienced this? As an FYI mine was at its peak size (pea size) and tender when I got my peak OPK, but has now swelling has gone down.

Re: Science behind swollen inguinal lymph nodes?

  • OPKs don't guarantee ovulation. I'd suspect this "swelling" is probably more hormonal than exact correlation with O (if that's real thing).  Kinda like EWCM.  EWCM means you are maybe gearing up to O, but maybe not.  I think it would be hard to distinguish a gland in your grown swollen to a "pea size".  Unless you are super skinny, I think it would be difficult for the general population to notice the "swelling".  But glands can swell for lots of reasons too.  That really doesn't answer your question (and I don't have TCOYF with me), but I tried a quick google search and not many reputable sights come up discussing lymph nodes.

  • That's the frustrating thing! The book mentions it for maybe two sentences and I'm having a difficult time googling about it when it pertains specifically to ovulation. I guess I am small enough to feel it because I don't feel it on the opposite side. It's also overall tender and a teeny bit achy. Hopeful someone else has experienced this, but has had better luck in their research than me!

  • But that seems to such a minor thing.  Are you tracking the more common symptoms of O?
  • Definitely, although my temps are wacky this cycle due to a cold of sorts so unfortunately confirming O this cycle seems like it won't happen.

  • Well a cold would make your lymph nodes swell absolutely 100% guaranteed!!
  • You've peaked my curiosity as well. I frequently have swollen inguinal glands (I have active lupus, so this is not uncommon), but I did notice it was a bit more uncomfortable this cycle. Given I had a mature follicle and AF is knocking at the door (I'm spotting my way to a period), I assume I ovulated (very rare for me). I never realized there was a correlation. I'll have to pay attention to that.

I know mine swell because my immune system is compromised and working overtime. I've known women who are more rundown around ovulation time vs AF. I wonder if that's the correlation. Hormones shifting then causing the immune system to be run down a bit. Mine are always larger when I have fevers, even very, very low grade. Of course, I have no science to put behind this, but you've definitely captured my interest.
  • Thanks for the background around your experience with it! It's very plausible that I'm sick and that's what is causing it this cycle, however, I imagine that TCOYF wouldn't include it in their signs of ovulation if it weren't correlated with O. Maybe you're right that were just generally run down during O. I read somewhere and can't find it now that the fluid from O can sometimes cause irritation and maybe that's why the lymph node swells? Which might explain why this tells you which side you O from? All speculation at this point!

  • The fluid thing makes sense to me, being that nodes collect fluid and lymph. I wonder if it's just part of the process? One thing is certain, they are my least favorite lymph nodes. They get so uncomfortable.
