Abnormality on Baby's Kidney

We had our 20 week ultrasound last week. The doctor called about an hour after we got home. She said there was something off about the baby's left kidney. She is sending us to the hospital on the 12th for a more detailed ultrasound. Have any of you ladies gone through this?

I'm sorry you are going through this and I pray for your and your little one. I suggest searching "kidney abnormality" on the high risk board. There may be someone there who has had this experience or similar. I'll look up some resources tomorrow morning and if I find anything, I'll post it to you for reading. Please keep us updated. Hopefully your scans will come back with good news and/or they can give you more of a diagnostic test to figure out what is going on.

ETA: I found this. I don't know if this is exactly what you are dealing with. Let me know it helps .https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/7275842/baby-has-a-kidney-cyst

  • I'm sorry to hear that you are going through this, and certainly am sending many thoughts and prayers to you and your baby. Please keep us updated as you learn more
  • Hugs. No direct experience, but my SO has a congenital defect and only has one kidney, his sister has one and a half.
Despite only having one kidney (and one and a half) SO and his sister are both very healthy, and SO didn't even know about his issue until he was 30. So hopefully IF there is an issue for your little one it is something minor and repairable, or something that doesn't cause any problems at all. Prayers for you and baby.
  • I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this. I don't have any experience, so I don't have any advice, sorry. I can only imagine how you feel, especially with such little information given! Sending thoughts and prayers your way. Please keep us updated.

  • I don't have any experience but will keep you in my thoughts! Keep us posted after your follow up on the 12th.
  • No experience either but praying for you!
  • Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Try not to stress too much. Idk if you are having a boy but several other moms here having sons have had us that showed something going on with their kidneys. I don't remember exactly what but whatever it was is pretty common in boys and is either gone by the time they are born or taken care of after. Please let us know when you find out more.
  • My scan today indicated that one kidney was measuring 5 mm instead of the expected 4 mm. This could be something that will resolve itself, or something that might require monitoring/surgery after birth, and is also a soft marker for downs.

It's pretty common in boys, and often resolves itself, to my understanding. If this is the problem, it's most likely nothing to worry about.
Is heartily apologizing to her child in advance for genes that predispose them to shitty vision and being Too Damn Tall.
  • Praying for good results for you and baby!

I'm not sure if it's the same abnormality, but they noticed something with my little boys kidneys being just over 4mm (renal pelvic dilation maybe?).  They said I need to come back for another ultrasound at 33 weeks to see if it went away but the doctor didn't seem  worried at all.  They told me what I had was very common in boys  at 20 weeks and that over 90% of the time it resolves well before birth (i.e. nothing was actually wrong) and that even if it doesn't, it's generally treatable at birth to varying degrees.  Again, I don't know if it's the same thing you have/if the kidney is much more enlarged, but before you go searching on the high risk boards you might want to see what the doctor actually found as it could be something minor.

Edit: to @Bubbz , my OB said that recent studies show that it isn't actually a soft marker for Down Syndrome as was previously thought, so that's one less thing to worry about
  • Hey ladies. Just had my ultrasound. The doctor said there was some swelling on his kidney but it is down to normal now. He said it is an indicator for down syndrome. They checked the other areas for downs and did not find any other indicators. So they decided to rule out downs. They say hes healthy, which makes me happy! Thank you for all your prayers and support.
  • That's great news!
