Preparing to bring baby home - household supplies edition!

I feel like I've read every list anyone has ever made about what to put on a registry, diaper bag, hospital bag, etc. and I've probably made about ten myself.

But I want to talk about how to make life a little easier once we get home for that first month! I've been clipping coupons and stocking up so I don't even need to think about shopping for certain things. Nothing too crazy, but definitely enough to last during my maternity leave. Here's what I've got so far:

-shampoo/conditioner for DH and me
-face wash
-shaving cream/razors
-body wash
-toothbrush/toothpaste
-laundry detergent/dryer sheets
-bottled water
-paper plates/plastic utensils (no time for dishes!)
-slow cooker liners for easy clean up!
-sandwich bags
-cereal bars
-paper towels
-toilet paper
-trash bags
-straws (I love using straws, hehe)
-food/litter for the cat

I just know if I ran out of something simple while home alone with baby, I would probably have an emotional meltdown. What are you stocking up on before baby?

  • We'll definitely stock up on paper plates, utensils, and plastic cups to avoid dishes.

We already keep a good stock on paper towels, toilet paper, and trash bags because I hate running out and needing to go to the store asap.

Ditto and ditto and preach and all the yes to paper plates and plastic utensils!

#pregnancybrain already forgot about those, haha! Soooo much dish soap and I don't even plan to do dishes hahaha
  • I second the make up essentials... I know I'm already going to be feeling tired and not looking my best, so any change to doll myself up with be a plus!

I'm also going to add some cleaning supplies like carpet cleaner for projectile fluids and wipes for furniture... you never know where that stuff is going to land.

  • I was just thinking about this yesterday, wanting to make sure I stocked up an extra on all my household stuff/toiletries so I'm not running out in that first month or so.
  • Amazon Prime really saved us last time. I agree it's great to stock up ahead of time, but for those things you forget or need last minute, it's great. I can order paper towels from my phone while I'm thinking about it, and it arrives in 2 days- before I even have time to get to the store.

We ended up buying a lot of baby essentials that way- after going through wipes faster than anticipated, or we misplaced all the pacifiers except one , etc. Way easier than Target with a newborn.
  • Amazon Prime + a grocery store with delivery. All you need in life! LOL

i totally plan on using and abusing amazon prime :) we also have "prime now" so we can even order stuff and get it delivered within an hour!!
  • I have a list of food for the pantry. Like rice, pasta, sauces, condiments, canned goods, etc. And I also have a few more cleaning supplies on my list like Lysol, stain remover for laundry, swifter solution, etc. I feel like since I know what my income is know stocking up on it makes sense before I go off work with an unpredictable income.
  • OMG I never thought about this. Thank you! I am always prepared and this never crossed my mind. I am however, redecorating my living room before he gets here. Iv been meaning to do this for awhile. Something I know I won't have energy for when he arrives. There are a lot of unnecessary things floating around that need to be moved/thrown away.

Time to stock up on essentials for the house !!! Wow!! $$$$
  • To add to the list: hand soap or sanitizer. You'll be surprised at how quickly you and visitors will go through the stuff in the first couple months.

I'm also keeping extra Nature's Miracle enzyme cleaner and pee pads on hand just in case our dog regresses and pees everywhere. He doesn't do well with change.
  • I didn't think about this either, the only thing I planned to do was make a grocery LIST before due date.
Looks like I have some shopping to do!
  • All I need is a car with a full tank and wifi.... whatever I think I need hubby can go get or can be shipped. I can't tell you how many Target and BRU runs he made those first days. Secretly I think he enjoyed the time away from us bc he never complained lol
  • I also made sure to pull out extra sheet sets for our bed and have them washed and ready. I also learned how to use the dishwasher (I always just hand washed even though we have always had one) so I can load up any dishes I actually use and walk away!

Also random, but useful: disconnect the doorbell. I swear if someone wakes me or a sleeping baby with that damn bell I will lose my MIND. Thinking of a sign for the front door: new mom with infant, go away. Leave the package on the porch. If you have food, just come inside and spoon feed me. THANKS.
