Like all the PP have said, the shot doesn't hurt. It feels like you are getting a flu shot or a blood draw. The thing that scared me the most is when I had mine done I had to go to L&D and was put in a delivery room just to get a shot. I asked why I was in there and the nurse said bc that was the only spot they had. Haha. I am O- blood type and will have to have the shot 2 x's again this go around.
This might be a stupid question but does a negative blood type mean you are Rh negative? I think I'm A- and my husband is AB-- does that mean I'll need the shot eventually?
You only need the shot if your husband or significant other has a + blood type. With the 2 different types of blood ( - and +) your body could develope antibodies against the + blood type thus resulting in your body attempting to fight against the baby thinking it was harmful.
Hmm I think I need it then. I think my husband is AB + (I put dashes in my earlier comment but did not mean them to be negatives).
I have heard this is a routine thing they check for and give the shots, but still scares me to think my body might have reacted badly to the baby if not for modern medicine!
When they draw your blood they will test for your blood type. If in fact you do have - blood type they should ask your husband his blood type. If he isn't 100 % sure, like my hubby, they will have tested him to find out. The way my ob described it with my first pregnancy is that since my DD was my first baby all should be well UNLESS there is something that causes bleeding; car accident, placenta previa, any sort of trauma that would cause the womb to bleed. At that point your blood could possibly mix with your baby's blood causing your body to deem the baby as harmful, form antibodies, and try to fight against the baby. The shot will help prevent your body from forming those antibodies. Like I said, talk with your ob and get your hubby's blood type tested.
Not any more painful than any other shot. My mom had me terrified when I had to get it for my first pregnancy. She told me I would bruise and hurt for days from it. I'm negative and husbands positive so every time we get pregnant I get it
I've gotten the shot 5 times now. Two with each of my 2 kiddos and then once with this one so far. I've always had to get mine on the hip and dang, they hurt. I've never had it on the arm. I would think that would hurt less. Just seems they always find the spot with little fat and shoot there. ;-) I'm o neg. Not sure what my hubs is other than +. Both our boys are also +

Maybe I'm reading this wrong and maybe I am wrong but I thought your actual blood type doesn't matter, it's whether you are Rhesus negative that matters. In that case if the baby is positive (which is possible if the father is positive) then you will need a shot.
If you O negative than you are rh negative. The sign at the end of your blood type matters. If you are A, Ab, O, B negative and your spouse is postive, you will get one. If your positive, you won't get one.
Oh, by a + she didn't me A+ blood, she meant a + blood type (does that help?) I can see now where the confusion was
Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize that your Rh status had something to do with being a + or - blood type. I think I must have misread my results as my doctor didn't go through them with me. My type and screen said O Positive and on the next line said Negative. So I assume this means I tested negative for Rh- and I am Rh positive? I'm so confused!! I wish she had explained it!

Not necessarily true, depending on the ob. Dh and I are both A- but my ob still has me get the shot. There is a 1 in 10,000 (or 10 million, can't remember) chance of two negative parents producing a positive baby. My ob has seen it happen twice in his career. Better safe than sorry is his motto.
Some places have you get the rhogam shot if you are a negative blood type regardless of what your partner's blood type is.
The amount of lying and mistakes that occur is pretty astounding. It's like ordering STI tests even if you swear up and down that there is no possible way for you to contract an STI. If someone was lying or unsure about paternity and they did not get the rhogam shot and it was actually necessary, the results could be catastrophic. If they give the shot to every negative blood type woman and some get it who don't need it, no big deal.
I also thought the shot was incredibly painful the first time I got it. Could have been the result of an inept MA though, she had to stick me twice because she "missed" and pulled the needle out before getting the meds in.

@RosyK@red3ye FYI my doc said that if this ever happened I could just get the shot within 48hrs after birth once they knew the baby was Rh positive ie, since my hubby and I are both O- I won't get the shot at 28 weeks and if by this crazy chance (weakly expressed D antigen or something, I forget the science) baby is positive it's still all good and once they know baby's blood type then they give me the shot. This was comforting to me knowing it's all good no matter what!
I had a miscarriage earlier this year and have a negative blood type. I got my shot on my butt cheek lol! I joked with the nurse on the way out rubbing my bum that perhaps that was a poor choice but honestly by the next morning I couldn't tell.
I'm at 9w4d, much further than last time so I'm cautiously optimistic.
Re: Rhogam shot?
First appt is Monday so I plan to ask then too.
