BFING moms-freezer stash

Who has a freezer stash started? How much do you have frozen? They say frozen milk lasts 6-12 months. When you go back to work, do you send frozen milk to the caregiver or send freshly pumped milk and save your freezer stash for later?

I have about 350oz stashed. I was saving 10oz a day but my clogged ducts and moving put a serious damper on my supply/stash. I go back in 5 weeks (omg just typing that is panic inducing). I plan on giving pumped refrigerated milk to daycare with frozen milk for them in the freezer so if they go through the fresh milk pumped from the day before they can add more. Who knows how it'll all work out..I may try and stop into the daycare on the way home from work at 8am to nurse if they let me.

  • I have 450 oz frozen as of today...I will send what I pump overnight to daycare and only use the frozen to fill in the gap. I go back to work Monday, so we will see how it goes!
  • I only have 50oz frozen so jealous of yalls stash!! I'll send the oldest to the nanny and freeze the fresh everyday, that way my freezer stash doesn't go out of date! I'll keep rotating and I plan to send a little extra frozen to the nannys house just in case he's ever extra hungry.
  • I plan on leaving freshly pumped milk for DH during the day. But when I pump at work I get more than I need for the next day so I leave out what we need plus one extra bottle and then freeze the rest. I currently have almost 400 ounces in the freezer.
  • Wow! I thought I was doing pretty well with my 174 ounces! I'm breastfeeding twins though, so both of them eat every time. I pump after I feed them both, so that's what I get afterwards. With my 3 year old son, I took fresh pumped milk to daycare everyday. But then we rushed trying to use up all the frozen milk before it expired. Plus I've heard that your milk changes with their age. So I don't want to give newborn milk to a 6 month old. Then the nutrients aren't what they need. Someone correct me if that's incorrect information! This time around dh will use the frozen milk and we'll just freeze what I pump and rotate it.

  • Thanks for this thread! I am pumping and freezing but I'll be honest I have not read or looked into anything about it all (all the rules of thawing, etc) for when I return to work in 6 weeks.

When you say store the freezer stash for later, what do you mean? Since most of yall are using fresh pumped milk from the day before? Just curious!
  • I have about 800 oz in my stash. But when someone watches her I leave milk in the fridge for people to use. I am rotating some of my stock but only because my plan is to stop pumping early.
And @DolphinLover2002, I recently used some of my milk from the first week at 10 weeks and her belly definitely did not tolerate it well, we had lots of poops like when she was a newborn.

For thawing, you can put it in the fridge to thaw it slowly, or put it in hot water to thaw it quickly. The only thing is that you have to use it within 24 hours. So plan accordingly so you don't waste any.
As far as saving it for later, if it's in a deep freeze, it's good up to 12 months. If it's in the freezer in your refrigerator, it is good for 6 months. So you have to use it within that time range or it goes bad. Some people like to use the fresh milk and save their frozen stuff for later incase of supply loss or just because they want lo to have fresh milk at daycare.

What is deep freeze vs frozen in my fridge freezer?

ETA: I have nothing frozen. I think I'm gonna start tonight.
  • @mvargas12 a deep freezer like a chest freezer. It stays colder and isn't opened as frequently so the frozen breastmilk can stay for longer. We bought one specially for breastmilk because we couldn't fit food in the freezer anymore. They're like $200 and can fit probably like 2000oz of BM (not exaggerating).

  • 400 oz for me, with 10 week old twins. I EP, though, and I oversupply by 8-15 oz a day.

I've just started using some of the oldest in bottles when we go places. In my earliest freezes I froze into ice cube trays so I just pop 3 cubes into a bottle. BUT, that only works with wide mouth bottles. And it took way longer than freezing into bags, so I quit freezing that way. Haven't thawed any bags yet.

I keep worrying that I'll quit producing as much, especially when I go back to work. Hopefully that's not the case, and having the stash means I can quit pumping earlier (9 months?) but still give breastmilk for a full year. We shall see!

I'm only able to freeze about 2 oz a day, and only have 50 oz frozen. So jealous of you stashes! My plan is to make my caregiver 3 bottles per day of half frozen/half fresh. Since I work 10 hr days, I'm also going to leave her enough frozen for a "just in case" 4th bottle.
  • I should have about ~250oz at the rate I'm pumping/freezing by the time I start work in 2 weeks. Hopefully it'll be enough for back-up if needed. I plan to use fresh milk as long as I have enough and will rotate the frozen milk out if it's been in the freezer for about ~3-6 mo.

Yeah this thread is stressing me out now.

    Me too!

  • Don't stress. LO was born 6/2 and I started stashing 6/21. So it's been awhile.

  • My LO was born 6/5 and I started stashing at a month old...don't stress! The stash actually builds pretty quick. I now pump about 12-15 oz each night to freeze.
  • I go back to work in Sept. Daycare will get 8 oz to keep in case LO goes through all her bottles in a day. I'm hoping to stop pumping early but get LO to 1 year on breast milk. I have 100 oz with dairy, 68 without. But it took me a month to get 100, and less than 2 weeks for the 68.

    Good work ladies!

You make me feel better I have 50oz too!! :)
  • I think I have something in the neighborhood of 500 oz. I'm back at work now, so at this point, I'm just maintaining that level. I'm freezing just about everything I pump, and then feeding him the oldest milk in the stash, which is about a month old. I'm not worried about him having too much "old" milk, because he is still nursing plenty.
