Pediatrician woes

edited August 2015 in July 2015 Moms
Hi,
I usually post on August 2015, but baby had other plans and came in July, so I thought I'd move over here for this.

This is my second baby and I decided to try a new pediatrician as I was not happy with my daughter's pedi (hour long wait times for the dr. feeling rushed through appointments, having to make appointments months in advance, feeling like concerns were brushed off).

So I went to the new pediatrician and saw the nurse practicioner. Baby started vomiting forcefully at a week old so I made a sick appt. They sent me to the hospital for an ultrasound, xray and gi study (this seemed a bit excessive, but I went with it). At the same time my older daughter had developed a rash. We brought her in too and they thought it was strep throat. So during the appt. They had to check both kids, do a strep test, and a billirubin test and make an appointment at the hospital. We waited in the room for over 30 min for the strep test (everyone thought someone else was doing it) Finally got the appt at the hospital (15 minutes from when they tell me and the hospital is 15 minutes away) and then they remember the billirubin test and finally do that (we were at the dr. for 1 1/2 hours total). The NP asked for the strep results when no one had even done the test. Ok, so here's the kicker, the rapid strep came back negative so they wanted to do a 24 hour culture to make sure. I never hear back with any results so I call today (72 hours later). Leave a message on the nurse line, they call back. They never did the culture, they forgot, they say it's probably not strep.

Is it me, or have I picked the worst pediatricians ever? Now I am at a loss, I don't know where to go, but I don't think I can go back there. How do I find yet another Pediatrician?

Re: Pediatrician woes

  • Maybe friends in your community can reccomend one they like??
  • Loading the player...
  • Ask your insurance..they should know who the popular ones are...or ask your gynecologist they suggested mine to me and I love them so far.
  • I would be livid.
  • I would not be happy. I am on some local facebook message boards for my area and mom's post all the time looking for pediatrician recommendations. Think about what are essential to you in a doctor before you go asking around again though
  • Wow. I would be furious. I would ask friends and family if they recommend any and then from the list I would interview them and choose from there. You could even interview a few random pediatricians in the area and choose them by location and speciality and narrow from there.
  • Also make sure they don't try to charge you for the 24 hour culture that they never did! I asked my OB for recommendations and so far really like the doctor we went with. I was there for an hour and half yesterday, but it was a Monday and she took plenty of time with me even though we didn't have any concerns, just a 2 mo check.
I work in ultrasound at our local hospital and clinics pull that crap all the time with scheduling. We know it's not the patient's fault that docs and schedulers do that! Hope everything looked good with those studies!
  • I wouldn't go back. I would be pissed! Ask friends and family who they recommend.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I don't have many friends with kids here or family so I've been internet searching with obviously not great results. We might wind up back at the first pediatrician. At least they were competent.

Oh and all the studies came back negative so nothing serious is wrong. Hopefully its just some reflux or something like that.
