Over 35 FTMs?

Hi, all - any other FTMs out there over 35? I'm 10w5d and things have been going fine. I heard the heartbeat at about 8 weeks and it sounded strong. I'm worried, though, about a bunch of stuff I can't control (like Downs), because of my age. Anyone else experiencing this type of anxiety because of our "advanced maternal age" (yuck)?

Re: Over 35 FTMs?

  • I just turned 36..and am super nervous! ! This is my 3rd pregnancy though with 2 prior miscarriages also so I have reasons to be nervous. I've never officially gotten to the 2nd trimester (i had a missed miscarriage at 12 1/2 wks) so I'm hoping I'll feel a little better then. But I'm also very nervous about downs and anything else that can go wrong. I'd give anything for a healthy baby! !

  • I hate the "advanced maternal age" thing - couldn't they come up with better wording? But yes, I am having some anxiety about the increased risk of things, although this isn't our first baby.

  • I'm 36 and I'm nervous too about everything that could go wrong. FTM too. I'll be happy after all the tests are done and I can relax :)

I'm 41--so yeah, I'm feeling really old right about now! Lol I'm 7+6 days and this will be my 2nd, but my 1st is 9 yrs old. I feel like I'm doing all of this for the first time! I had an MC in Feb and my Dad made a very insensitive comment about that and my age, so I don't really want to tell him I'm pg again for fear he'll say something else I don't want to hear. DH and I are happy to wait until my 2nd tri to tell our families. Of course I know the risks and I'm very nervous. I'm having a harmony blood test around week 11 and I'm so glad these tests exist. Wishing all of you ladies a happy and healthy 9 months!

Hey y'all! I am 36, but will be 37 before the twins are born. I'm at 10 weeks exactly today and am totally showing because... it's twins!
Apparently the odds of having multiples increase dramatically after age 35, so that's probably why I'm in this position. My DH has a 9 and 11 year old from his previous marriage, so between that big time gap and it being twins he feels like he's doing this for the first time.

I didn't appreciate the "advanced maternal age" designation at the ob/gyn. Hopefully everything will be okay- I'm worried about the same things you ladies are worried about.

  • Thanks for the camaraderie, everyone! We're having the CVS test on Tuesday and another ultrasound, so hopefully in a couple weeks we'll know not only the sex (super early!) but also risks of birth defects. The last one was normal and the measurements all seemed to add up to my due date. I guess there's something with Down's where they measure the size of the baby's neck? Seems a bit early for that, but what do I know?

My friend is my age (37) and they called hers a "geriatric pregnancy" at 35. I think that's worse than "advanced maternal age."

I guess all we can do is take care of ourselves, and hope and pray that our babies are ok!

kannbaby, I'm so sorry about your 12 1/2 week miscarriage. I can't even imagine that, and I'm not that far yet.

  • hi!  I'm on my 2nd at 39.  Will have him/her weeks before I turn 40.   I had my first baby at 37.
I'm always worried about the genetic stuff at this age, but there's absolutely nothing we can do to change it so we should try not to stress it.

I am annoyed that I can't get an earlier appointment to run the cell free DNA test though.  I could have had it as early as last week and i have to wait two more weeks. ugh ugh ugh.  Patience is not my thing.
  • FTM here and I'm 35. 10 weeks and change along. My doctor keeps saying my age isn't anything to really stress over...However I stress over everything so that is easier said than done!
  • I will be 35 by the time baby gets here and am terrified about all the genetic risks. I am not sure if I want to do genetic testing but my friends are pushing me to. I want this baby so bad.
  • 35 next month...second baby. Trying not to worry but can't help being a bit worried. Not sure if I will do the panorama test....tempting....

  • I'm 35 and this is my third baby and even though I never did any screening with my previous kids my doctor has suggested that we do the Panorama right at 11 weeks since I'm now "advanced maternal age". So I'll be doing the test since I would like to be prepared if something is wrong.
  • I will be 37 for this baby. I just turned 35 before my first and despite struggling to conceive and losses (ironically before I hit advanced maternal age) and I had a very easy healthy pregnancy.

I didn't do genetic testing for one and am not sure if we will do it for two. To me age is just a number and the only difference between 35 year old me and soon to be 37 - I had more sleep because I didn't have children.

  • Hollywood moms! I love it!  <:-P
  • Hi! I'm 34 but will be 35 when this baby is born, so I too am of 'advanced maternal age'. And yes, my doctor recommends the blood test to determine risks for anyone who will be 35 or older at the time of delivery. Since she recommends it, we'll do it, and of course it increases my anxiety a bit!

I was 31 when DS was born, and had a miscarriage at 6w1d in April. When I was pregnant the first time I was so paranoid about EVERYTHING, and while I'm more comfortable with certain things (not freaking that my fave pizza place uses unpasteurized cheese on their pizza since it's completely melted on the pizza, etc., and even ate some deli meat that I had heated in the microwave!), this 'advanced maternal age' has brought about some new worries.

diablesse said... There's nothing absolutely nothing we can do, so let's not stress about it and enjoy our pregnancies!

Oh... and I seriously feel like my exhaustion and nausea / food aversions are worse this time around, but I truly wonder if it's because now I have a 3 1/2 year old I'm trying to keep up with! Ha!

  • Hi I'm 35 and this is my first. I'm on my 9th week already and according to my ultrasound 2 weeks ago, all is fine. I don't know if it's because I'm 35 that I almost had difficulty in everthing.. Nausea/ food aversion/ exhaustion etc...
  • I'm 37 and almost 10 weeks. As FTM I'm nervous about the higher risks we face being "older" expecting moms. My doctor doesn't seem too concerned, in fact where I live being over 35 and pregnant is the norm. My doctor's average pregnancy patient is 38 and she herself had her first baby at 37. So that makes me feel a little more at ease that the vast majority will have healthy pregnancies. I'll be doing all of the genetic testing and while there is some anxiety associated with it I am going to try to remain positive and hope for the best outcome..happy healthy baby!
  • Almost 9 weeks and will be 39 at delivery. Worried about the possible complications or genetic issues but trying not to stress because there isn't much to do about it.

  • Hi all! I just turned 36 and, of course, am anxious about everything I can't control. I'm thankful to be pregnant and hope we all have a happy and healthy time being pregnant!
  • Hi everyone,

Sounds like we are all in the same boat and stressed over the age thing and all the tests that are to come. I had my first 2 kids at 33 and 35. Looking back now I feel like I was so young. I am 8 weeks along with my 3rd and will be almost 41 when the baby is due.
  • I'm 37 and a FTM! 9 weeks and 2 days... It's very scary, but as others of you have said, there's not much you can do about these things. My doctor also does not seem overly concerned. It's pretty average these days!
