Frequent ultrasounds dangerous?

My mom maintains that having a lot of ultrasounds is dangerous. I don't know why my OB does one every appointment but she does. Is this odd to have them this frequent and has anyone heard any research about them being dangerous?

Re: Frequent ultrasounds dangerous?

  • There's some data to suggest overuse is harmful, but it's not been conclusively proven. However, an ultrasound at every appointment is excessive and unnecessary unless you have some special high-risk case. I'm a bit surprised that insurance would cover that many ultrasounds.

  • There was another thread about this. I mobile so I can't link it.
  • Thanks Boston baby I couldn't find it before but I just did sorry to repeat post!
  • My insurance will only pay for one (anatomy scan) without extensive documentation as to why any additional US are needed.

No problem. I'm sorry I couldn't link it for you!
  • Is it an ultrasound or a mini ultrasound? Hopefully someone can tell me the correct name lol. My doctor does the same although it is on a small laptop and isn't as clear as a regular ultrasound. She'll either use that or a doppler at every visit. I don't think they would be giving us regular ultrasounds if it was harmful.
  • I couldn't find the other post on this but am interested in the info!

Myself and too of my pregnant friends have all had ultrasounds every visit (once a month) and we all have different insurances and see different doctors. 1 of my friends is high risk but 2 of us aren't. I've heard from people we shouldn't be doing that because of "radiation to the baby" but I don't see how it's radiation, isn't an ultrasound just sound waves? I highly doubt all of our doctors would be doing it so frequently if there was a risk.
  • How frequent are your appointments? A US once a month wouldn't be harmful I don't think ... if you were doing one daily or even weekly, then I think there might be a problem. However, I would be checking to make sure my insurance will cover that many. I wouldn't want them doing one every single time only to find out that I'm paying an arm and a leg for something that is seemingly unnecessary.

My office does USes every appointment until 12 weeks ... so for me, that was my first appt at 7 weeks and my second at 12 weeks. Then we did an NT scan (our choice) at 13 weeks ... and we had our anatomy scan at 20 weeks. We won't have another one unless it becomes necessary. My OB does find heartbeat with a doppler at every appointment though.

My OB has a mini ultrasound machine in a couple of her exam rooms. I see the baby every appt if the room is available. She told me that she likes to make sure everything is still looking good (fluid level, movement, heartrate, etc.) and the baby stays head down (later in pregnancy). Each ultrasound is only 5 mins at most. I trust my OB and the choices she makes for the welfare of my children. She was my OB for my first son as well.
  • Foothills hospital in calgary did a study on ultrasounds and hearing loss or issues with high numbers of them and found some evidence but I also think since their not high tech they aren't as bad :) I know getting multiple 3D/4D is bad , but the lower grade ones im pretty sure are fine :)
  • I'm not high risk and yes they were once a month except once extra when I went in for spotting. I'm not too worried about insurance since I have two, both very good. They said that's their protocol up until 20 weeks anatomy, which I had yesterday (and baby boy was perfect!) and then they just do one more around 34 weeks to make sure he turned and see how big he is. Glad to hear a lot of you get them that much or don't think they're bad! They don't even usually spend long looking except this anatomy scan. Usually it was just a quick peek to make sure his heartbeat is good and he measured on time still. I always kind of liked the peace of mind. But my mom got me worried lol.
