Pumping At night- foremilk or hind milk?

my daughter has recently started sleeping through the night (!!!!!) and so my boobs are really engorged around 3 or 4 and then again around 7. I am pumping just enough for relief so I can go back to sleep, but my production is very high and I usually get about 2 oz per breast. is that all foremilk because they are so full? Would it be bad to store it and use it later if it doesn't have hind milk? How can you tell? I don't like pumping and dumping-it seems like such a waste.

Re: Pumping At night- foremilk or hind milk?

  • The only way I can think to tell is to refrigerate it, and see if the cream rises to the top, so to speak.

  • Don't dump it!  It is probably mostly foremilk, but there is nothing wrong with that.  You can usually tell by the color - the more clear milk is foremilk, and the thicker, creamier milk is hindmilk.  If I pump a batch that is heavy on foremilk, I just mix it with milk that I've pumped at a later time of day that has more hindmilk.
  • Nothing wrong with LO getting foremilk. Especially if it's only occasionally in a bottle. I was concerned about my LO getting too much foremilk as he never empties my breasts and his poop is quite frequently green. My pediatrician was not concerned at all and said she hears so many moms worried about too much foremilk and it's really not as concerning as people think it is. Don't dump that milk!!!
  • I plan to start weaning from the MOTN pump and this occurred to me while thinking about pumping for relief. My theory is that either I can mix it with other milk, or 2-4 extra ounces of fore milk a day wont affect them if they get a good balance the rest of the day.
