Birth Photography

Any of you planning on having a professional photographer for the birth? I'm a photographer myself and I'm contemplating it. Most of the pictures I see are awesome and just so priceless but then again I think it might be awkward to have someone in there with us. And of course I know it's hard to plan since no one can really predict when labor will happen. I would almost rather have those than maternity pics. Too many thinks to think about as the time nears.

Re: Birth Photography

  • I've thought about this too. My husband's aunt is a photographer I was thinking of asking her. I think it would be akward, but when I'm actually there pushing I don't think I'll be thinking about her being there. Lol and then I'm not sure how many people can be in the room. Because aside from my husband my sister has been insisting to be there as well.

If it was a close friend of mine who I knew would be supportive and leave if I needed it, then perhaps I would think about it.  However, I know from experience how frustrating it can be to have to play hostess while you're in pain and people are flitting about.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • I didn't with my first. I honestly didn't even consider it. I won't with this one either.

We did get pics of DD1 afterwards though, like a day or two later.

  • I will probably have my sister do it again. I wish I could afford a real photographer but just can't spend $3-500 on it.

That's my problem is I just can't spent so much on pictures and plus I don't even want anybody but my husband in the delivery room when I'm pushing..
  • Yeeeeeah no. I'm a photographer and I'm gonna have someone come to the house to take pictures a few weeks later. I don't think I'll want to worry about how I look / another person when I'm pushing a baby out.
  • I'm considering the "fresh 48" package. Not sure how I'd handle someone photographing the actual birth but I think I would love some pics right after.
  • My doula's an amateur photographer so I'm all about the birth photos!
  • I did birthing photos with my last pregnancy and I adore those pictures. The photographer is really no different than an extra nurse in the room when you're pushing. They stay out of the way and are just doing their job. If you're considering it, I would call around and get a feel for photographers. You actually can interview them to see if you click. My photographer is actually going to do my birth pictures and fresh 48 as a package deal.
  • I am strongly considering it since all of my family is out of town and this is the first grandchild for both sides. I don't want her to photograph the actual birth but I really love the labor and immediate post birth photos I've seen. Now I just have to save the $1000 it costs. Yikes!
  • My doula took some pictures last time. They are some of my favorites.

What? Is the photographer renting a soundstage for that price?
  • We just booked our birth photographer yesterday and I'm so excited! As far as planning for it...she will get a text or call when we head to the hospital and she arrives when we are nearing 7cm even if it is in the middle of the night.  So she's there from transition to when our families first come in after the birth.

My aunt had a birth photographer for a scheduled c-section (which I imagine would be a lot easier for planning) and those are some of the most precious/amazing pictures!  As a photographer myself, it did take me awhile to find someone whose work I really liked and I wanted to make sure I felt comfortable with her, too.  But I've been freaking out about our parents sending out [unattractive] pictures to people or posting them online before we get a chance to do it ourselves...I've also decided I don't care how my makeup looks but I am having my hairstylist come and do my hair in a braided updo so it's pretty but totally manageable.  My guess is that much like a wedding photographer, I'll probably forget she is even there!

Wow.  You're going to have your hairstylist come to the hospital bed to do your hair?  That seems a little unrealistic.  My suggestion would be to work with your stylist starting soon on a sturdy but pretty updo that you can do on your own.  A crown braid going into a side braid would be great and it's not difficult to do.  You don't want to worry about your hair or makeup while you're trying to push out a child.

  • Nope nope nope.  I faint at the sight of blood, no way would I ever be able to look at birth photos.  I also hate having my picture taken in general; I only got a wedding photographer because I figured I'd regret not having anything besides candid guest shots, and 2.5 years later they're still only in digital version.

I think my hospital has a photographer visit new moms for a few newborn shots, the packages will probably be overpriced but its one less thing to worry about.

Oh yes, that would be unrealistic! She is coming to my home (she's a close friend) once I start having contractions very early on and before I'm at the hospital, or maybe just once my due date arrives and before anything happens - kind of playing that by ear.  I feel like once there at the hospital would be kind of unrealistic.  She only lives a few minutes away so it shouldn't be a problem.  However, since it could be at night it would definitely be a good idea to learn how to do something simple myself! Good idea!
  • We are doing the Fresh 48 hour pictures. I really just want to capture our daughter meeting her baby brother for the first time. And hospital pictures of newborns always give me baby fever so I know I will treasure these. She is a close friend of ours so I feel more than comfortable with her!
  • @thefithuntress lol you'd think so! A castle at the very least. I'm in Austin and the prices are crazy. The photographer I liked the most was $1990 which I refuse to pay. Haven't found anyone under $750. The search continues...
