Belly band question AFTER baby for second, third, etc. time moms!

Hi, ladies!

My sister told me that I need a belly band...and she gives me a lot of advice. As to not hurt her feelings, I thought I'd ask your opinions on whether or not they're helpful for recovery (pain, swelling, etc.) or if they're more for "getting your pre-baby body back." P.S. She had a C-section and I obviously don't know what my delivery will be like yet, but if you found them helpful with recovery, then did you have a vaginal birth or are they more useful after a C-section. Thank you in advance, ladies!

  • OK I'm a STM and I never heard of a belly band until I joined this board haha my mom had 5 and never wore one. We both had vaginal deliveries though. I don't have one for this time either. I understand it for c-section but I don't think it's necessary. That's just my opinion though haha

  • I don't know anyone irl who has used one with the exception of csection mom's and that's more because of surgical recovery not cosmetics and the hospital often gives them to section moms to help stay binded for healing.

I can't imagine wearing anything tight or binding after having a baby. After 9 months of being uncomfortable, the thought of essentially wearing spanx on my tummy 24/7 sounds awful, even if it did make my tummy shrink faster it wouldn't be worth it imo.

  • There was a post on this a couple of days back where ladies were asking about brands and where to get them... I am a ftm due sept 5 and I have a belly band and a compression like band to help get my hips back after baby... Like I said I am a ftm so I can't really speak out of experience but a lot of people on this community talked about how they were more comfortable wearing one after birth (natural or c Section) because your belly is as they put it soft and gooey feeling and its supposed to help your belly get back to its pre baby size faster i guess
  • My friend asked the hospital for the belly band they give to c-section moms (she delivered vaginally). She really liked it because her belly felt like it was full of jelly after delivery and everything feels so loose, so it helped her feel more belly feel more supported and less jelly-like. I plan on asking my doc at my next appt is it's option for me to request one at the hospital after I deliver; if I don't have to buy one separately, I might as well take advantage!
  • They are also called binders. My doc told me to ask for one after my last pregnancy because I have a weak back.
  • I was really glad to have my belly bandit after dd was born. My skin and muscles felt really loose and floppy without it and it really gave me a lot of support, especially for breastfeeding. I probably wore it for about three weeks or a month.

It's actually really comfortable and the compression felt great on my abs and back.

  • Thank you, ladies! I figure that I have plenty of time to worry about my figure, but if it helps shrink my uterus back to normal size or with aches and pains, then I'm all in! I thought that the one she sent me a link to, that you can wear cold, might feel good.
  • Honestly I wouldn't shell out the money if you are not able to. You for sure will want something supportive to wear but I bought tight shapewear from any store and it worked just fine.
  • I had a c-section and having a binder was truly a lifesaver. They gave me one in the hospital on day 3 or 4 and it helped me feel like my guts weren't falling out every time I stood up. And ditto the jelly-like quality of my stomach. It helped me feel more "solid" and stable. Also helped contractions not hurt as much while nursing. I wore one every second of the day unless I was in the shower for about 3 months. I definitely recommend one - and most doctors will prescribe one for you in the hospital so it shouldn't cost you anything.
  • My OB also advised one for abdominal muscle adhesion and support which can help with back pain. This is my 3rd large baby so my abs need all the help they can get. Mine aren't uncomfortable. A girdle - maybe - but my bands aren't that tight.
  • On the previous post someone mentioned above there was a link about bengkung belly binding. My abs have separated really bad with this pregnancy and apparently it works wonders in healing that. If it does help my belly shrink back faster I'm totally ok with that too :) I have purchased one and look forward to using it!
  • @BeachBabe22 I know you had posted a link to the band you used on a previous thread, would you mind posting it again? I want to check it out again :-)
  • They say is really good to use weather you have a a viginal birth or a csection it's not just for csection mom. I have had 2 csection and will have my third soon in September. I have never used one for my past two and I healed up good and went back to my flat stomach in two weeks which people are always surprised how flat my stomach gets and back to pre pregnancy body/weight I get. But this time I am planning to use it just to try it. Why not? I have never been left with the "pouch" that they say "csection moms" are left with, but it's worth a try. It's actually recommended for every mom to use after delivery. (Not just csection moms)
  • I'm planning on trying the Belly Bandit after I get home. I'm borrowing my friend's just in case it doesn't feel awesome but she had amazing things to say about it. Helped her get her ab muscles back quickly and feel supported. She didn't wear it with tight shirts (you can see it) but wore it 24/7 around the house except for shower.

This is the one I wore after I had my daughter and already packed in my hospital bag.  I loved it and it is so cheap that you can't go wrong.

  • I wore a belly bandit after my c section and it was amazing, the fabric is bamboo so it's super soft, it doesn't move around or bunch up- and it worked like it should, basically I was suddenly able to walk normal and at a faster pace because I didn't have to hold my incision area all the time. The first few times (maybe first week) my husband had to help me get in it because it's Velcro and you want it to feel firm.
Totally worth the money just for the support it gives you, the helping you shrink down faster is just an added bonus.

Did you put anything between your incision and the belly bandit? I'm close to pulling the trigger and buying one but I'm worried it might rub and irritate the incision if I use it right away.
