Having trouble eating

Hey y'all so since I first found out I was pregnant my appetite changed. I started this pregnancy plus sized and I still am but I have lost 13 pounds so far. I WANT to eat. I'm hungry so I know baby girl is too. I feel so guilty. Food just seems so incredibly unappetizing to me. I really am having a hard time with this. Any other women in the same boat or have been in the same boat? Any suggestions on how I can possibly turn this around? The Dr. Does not seem worried but I am! Any insight will help.

Re: Having trouble eating

  • Can you tell us a little bit more about what you ARE eating? You may very well be eating enough for you and baby, just not as much as maybe you were before.

Appetite I think is one of those things that changes individually by person and by pregnancy.

I am never really hungry and never really crave anything in particular (my husband gets so frustrated that I never have ideas for dinner) but once it is in front of me, I'll eat it. If it was never put in front of me, i'd probably be fine not eating too.

Try and focus on things that DO sound appetizing for you. Or things that are packed full of what you need so you don't need to eat as much ... for example, part of an avocado gives you tons of healthy fats, etc, by only eating a small piece of it. Same goes with nuts or hard boiled eggs or things like that. Best bang for your buck. If you stick to things like that, you may not have to eat as much to get everything you need.

Another go to for me on "non-hungry" days are smoothies. I could drink a smoothie all day long and as long as I pick one with protein, veggies/good fruits, etc, then I'm getting what I need in a form that I can actually eat.

  • I used to eat out with my husband all the time and now that I'm pregnant, no restaurant sounds appetizing. That's because I only want bland foods. The more simple, the better! So I've been just eating brown rice and veggies, fruit, mashed potatoes, etc. No spices, no sauces. Keep it very simple and cook it yourself so that you know what goes into it! Pre-packaged foods are not appetizing because you have no idea what they put in there. Hope that helps!
  • I started a thread about loss of appetite thread and got a piece of advice there that might help. Basically our taste buds change so much during pregnancy and you have to keep trying different foods until you find things that taste good to you now.
  • I agree with PP's, but also, try snacking instead of eating full meals. This has really helped me. I'm always intimidated by "meals" once they are set in front of me, and like immediately loose my appetite. If out, try ordering a salad or appetizer. If home, try string cheese or nuts or fruit or peanut butter toast, etc. Also, cereal is mainstay in my diet. Honey Bunches of Oats is fortified with vitamins, + what you get from the milk. Try focusing on what DOES sound good to you, and adding in from there.
  • I have had a really hard time eating as well. I really try to eat anything that even sounds good for a second... Meat has been my biggest problem I take one bite and I feel sick :(
  • I am just going to C&P what I posted in @Mizuiro007 's the other day!

It took a long time for me to get my appetite back. I mostly find that it is because my taste buds seem to have changed. The foods I used to love and want to eat a ton of don't taste they way I think they should. SO made me the most delicious looking sandwich about a week ago, but I took one bite and started to cry because it tasted like sand and I was so sad!

Some of the filing snacks that get me through are corndogs, pb&j sandwiches, pretzels with grapes or cheese, and kebabs (skewered meat and veggies grilled over a BBQ pit, it does something to the food and brings out this very primal hunger that I haven't expereinced with any other food this whole pregnancy). Also try some of those things that "they say" all pregnant women like... like pickles. Athletes use pickle juice to alleviate muscle cramps, so eating a pickle may take some pressure off your abdominal muscles and make it more appealing to eat other food.

I have no science behind any of these things, but its what worked for me... so there is a chance it might be able to help you out. Also, I have been getting some serious indigestion right after I eat even though I drink tons of water. After dinner (my only full meal of the day) I have to take a walk or I won't be able to sleep for hours!!! Thankfully, so far, whenever I have had a problem, it hasn't taken me too long to find a solution that works.

  • I was just telling my coworker about this today, I have gotten to the point now where i'm drinking water or juice so that i don't try to eat things I know i'm not going to want. I will eat cereal and pasta. Everything else is blahhhhhh! I cannot explain it. But i was overweight so i needed the boost in weight loss. Hope everything works out with you i'll be speaking with my doctor tomorrow.
  • Snacking is much easier I find than full meals
  • I find bland food with low smell is easiest. I also avoid sour ( yogurt which  I love unpregnant) and chemically food (precooked meals or eggs).  Eggs (not precooked), oatmeal, nectarines, and cereal work well.  My OB has a clinic to help overweight  women loose weight while pregnant so I wouldn't worry too much.
  • Oh and I forgot to mention granola bars! Just be sure to check the sugar to make sure they aren't loaded up. Those made from oats and nuts and dried fruit are usually good. and easy to eat!  KIND bars are awesome.
