New job - poor benefits

I'm sure there are many threats on this topic but I'm starting a new job today and I'm 4 months. Gonna hold off on telling my new boss I'm pregnant for now but the benefits are trash. Not much about maternity leave, I've been doing research on my company and I guess that's not covered, I just needed to hurry and get back to work to make money and find something where I can sit most hours. * concierge at a few condos * btw

Have you tried to look up information on short term disability? That is what mat leave falls under a lot of times. But, I know a lot of places you have to work for a year or 6 months before you can qualify for STD. But I think you are still protected under FMLA for the time off, you just won't get paid.

I think you technically have to work somewhere for a year to be eligible for FMLA. It is up to the discretion of the company, they can grant you FMLA, but are not required to.

Yep, looks like that is right. So OP your new job doesn't have to let you take the time off. Bummer!
  • Right, seems like il just be saving up

I'm in the same boat. In terms of short term disability, whether public or private, it's pretty much too late to qualify because your pregnancy will be considered a pre-existing condition.

Hopefully in the next few years, more employers will offer some sort of paid compensation for maternity leave. A few major companies are offering something now, so at least it is in the news and being discussed!

Additionally, I would suggest mapping out a short term savings plan from now until the baby gets here. My hubs and are are in the process of determining what we need to save now and be able to pay from savings while I'm off.

    (Edited for more info)
  • I'm in the same boat I can have time off for medical reasons but it's not paid time off so I basically have to save up but I plan to pay bills and rent ahead so all that can be covered and I can be stress free with my LO.
  • Well that just sucks, are you going to tell them eventually or just have to call in sick for a few weeks? Or quit?
  • Our company provides paid maternity leave as STD (6 weeks or 8 weeks) and then people can take FMLA after a year of employment. If I had a new employee who was expecting, I would try to work with her to at least give her 6 weeks unpaid leave and job security, but I would hope/expect she would tell me ASAP so I could plan for what to do and cover her work while she is out.

As a woman, I would really like to see the U.S. Impose year long paid maternity leave for employees like other countries, but as a small business owner, if that leave wasn't federally funded paying it would sink us.

I'm going to tell them because I'm going to start showing soon but I'm gonna try to wait up to a month. I'm sure I'm going to resign when the time comes.
