Last feeding of the day

My LO is 3 weeks old and has been breastfeeding great. However, a few days ago just at the 10 pm feeding, he latches on and then immediately pulls off screaming. He then acts desperate to re-latch and to drink, and there is milk flow, but it's like it isn't what he wants and he is starving. We continue this screaming, latching, pulling off for about 30 minutes. He has done this for the past few nights. Thoughts?

Re: Last feeding of the day

  • Mine does this sometimes too. He's 4 weeks. Sometimes when he's really hungry and I can't get to him that very second he kinda goes super picky on me and acts like that yo my left breast. He prefers the right. I just put him to the right and he's fine. Also I find that when he's really gassy or has to poop he does this. He latches and then starts fussing and pulls off then just kinda rubs his mouth on my nipple like he's looking for it but then won't latch. Its annoying. I just wait a min and calm him down and try again. Not sure if this helps u at all. Good luck.

  • Mine does that too! He's five weeks old tomorrow. I think he gets overly tired sometimes. I asked the lactation consultant about it and she said just keep trying. I get too frustrated (and my nipples hurt too much) after awhile so I give in and give him a bottle. Then at the next feeding we go back to breastfeeding.
  • Our LO does that when he's gassy, too. I try to latch him a few times (seems to help him pass gas) and try to burp him again if we're not having luck that way. He'll drop the latch himself, but then seem frantic trying to relatch.
  • Mine does this sometimes. I sing to her to calm her down..it usually works :)
  • Babies get confused and can't physically tell the difference between needing to poop, pass gas, or if they are hungry. Also, eating triggers the intestines to start moving things along so it's normal for baby to poop while eating.

It's still my first reaction to put my LO on the boob, but it's not always what he actually needs. Pooping is hard! They just need a few more weeks to get better at it (about 2-3 months old). You can try doing bicycles and tummy rubs before you start your feeding to get things jump started too.
  • Mine started this around 3 weeks too. He will be 6 weeks tomorrow and still does it. Usually it starts mid/end of feed and happens more in the evenings. Still not really sure why. Like others have said, maybe gas issues as he eats? I was going to ask pediatrician at appt tomorrow.
