Fetal abdominal cyst

At my 20 week appointment yesterday the ultrasound tech told my husband & I that our baby boy seemed to have a cystic area above his right kidney. She doesn't believe it to be effecting the kidney but stated it looks to be somewhere in his abdomen. The cyst isn't even an inch long. For now they want to continue to monitor it & our baby. I've had my first round of blood to completed which came back negative for any markers & they drew more lab work yesterday. The US tech stated that typically if the first came back negative so would the second one. My doctor also wants us to see the genetic counselor next week as she is out of town this week. So far baby's heart, brain and other organs are growing appropriately but my husband & I are so worried! This is our first pregnancy & are very scared. I've been praying hard everything is ok with our baby boy! My doctor said the genetic counselor may recommend the maternit21 lab draw which tends to be more sensitive than the routine tests ordered. I don't know what this is supposed to mean. I've been reading up on this sort of thing & many people have reported that they were told their baby had a cyst & their baby's turned out to be perfectly healthy. Help!

  • Thank you! It really means a lot to me! Xoxo
  • I don't have any personal experience, but recall many members saying that the cysts can resolve on their own before birth. Good luck in your follow up appointments. You will be in my thoughts.
  • No experience but sending you lots of love and positive thoughts, prayers that everything works out just fine for you and baby.
  • If you haven't done the maternit21 test, what was the first round that didn't have any markers? The NT scan?

I think these days small cysts, etc show up on the scans a lot more due to the advanced technology. A lot of the times, they resolve on their own. FX this is the case for you and your LO!

  • We completed step 1 & 2 of the sequential screen. We just completed step 2 yesterday. Both are lab draws for Down's syndrome & neural tube defects. Step 1 came back negative.

    Thanks!

  • No personal experience but a friend had two ultrasounds that showed something suspicious and it turned out to be nothing.  It can depend on the skill of the tech.  Having other ultrasounds as it gets closer they will be able to see a lot clearer as baby gets bigger and you will be able to be prepared if they need to treat something at birth.  As hard as it can be try not to worry too much until you know for sure one way or the other.
