Nipple pain after pumping?

i was wondering if anyone else experienced nipple pain after pumping? Basically my nipples get really long and hard after pumping and it hurts to put them in a bra or anything really. I have to either let them sit out for 10-15 minutes or put LO on them to soften them up. Is this normal or is my equipment possibly too small?

I should also point out that I am 4 weeks PP and only able to pump a total of 1 ounce from both breast each session. LO is gaining probably and satisfied each feeding so I feel like I should be getting more.

I know there are tons of discussions about pumping and I have tried to read through all of them for advice but I couldn't find anything about the nipple pain. If someone finds it, be nice and just bump it please

Re: Nipple pain after pumping?

  • Mine hurt too after pumping and also when I first start pumping. Not sure what to do about it though. Hopefully someone else will answer this with some advice.

  • You could try putting Lanolin on them before and after pumping. I also have these things called nipple soothies which feel awesome to put on them after pumping. Or it is possible you're using the wrong size pump attachment.
  • Could be the flange size. You should google or go on your pump's website and look for pictures of how far your nipples should go into the flanges when pumping. I didnt know with my first and was exclusively pumping-ended up with cuts on my nipples and serious soreness.

  • Yes, mine hurt after I pumped :( I would soak in a warm shower or put warm towels on them after. It felt so nice
  • @alanna7777 is right. If your pump doesn't fit properly, it will hurt! In the meantime, coconut oil is great for soothing the soreness, and it's safe for consumption so you don't have to worry about washing it off, you can just let your skin absorb it.

  • Overall I find pumping to be more uncomfortable than I do breast-feeding. I am using a nipple shield when I breast-feed at home but not when I'm out and about. One lactation consultants said I could try the nipple shield when I pump which seem to feel better but was kind of a pain when it would come out of place. I've attached a good illustration of how the pump should fit
  • Thanks for the responses and the illustration. Based on that it appears my flanges fit perfectly and I need to suck it up! I am not necessarily sore, it just hurts to put a bra back on because my nipples are so perky afterwards!
  • @dunn1678 I know the nipples do feel and look a little weird when you pull them out of those pumps LOL
  • I sometimes experience some pain. To cope I take hot showers or I sit braless and rub some breast milk on them and let the cool air from the fan/AC hit it and the pain usually subsides after awhile
  • I use the flanges that came with the pump and have some tenderness, too. A couple moms in my lactation group ordered "pumping pals" off of amazon. They are shaped a bit different and are supposed to be a little more effective. I haven't used them, but it sounds like they are more comfortable, too!
