3rd Trimester

Confession

My 9 year old daughter has a computer.  She needs to use the computer daily for school and with me taking online classes and sometimes working from home, there's no sharing.

Confession#2

She also has a myspace page, but her only friends are me, daddy, and our cousins.  Everything is private and she doesn't even know the password so one of us has to be with her to log on.

 Flame away.

  • Loading the player...
  • As long as you keep it secure and have the password, seems OK to me.

  • Sounds like you definitely have control of the situation, so no flame for you! Its one thing to let your kids have free range, but you definitely are monitoring what they do and I commend you for that. =)
  • If you have to be with her to log on this is a whole different story.  It sounds like you're being very responsible about your daughter's internet usage.

  • I don't think it's a big deal as long as it's being monitored.

  • Yep, she's not allowed online by herself.  She has to know the password to hook up to the wireless internet.  Either way, my kid is a bookworm and only wants to go to this KidBiz website where she can do extra credit reading activities LOL

  • what classes is she taking for school that is online at 9?

Yes, my kids take computer classes at school. They turn on the computer and are directed directly to a website, there is no other option.

Its rediculous that she has a myspace. Flame me.

EDIT: I just read your reply, we posted at the same time. There is a website i take the kids to that is like that reading one. I stand by my myspace comment though. sorry.

  • I am really impressed with your monitoring! That is great parenting!
  • I am not a fan of myspace in general, so i just don't see a need for a 9y/o to have one??

  • I think the fact that she doesn't even have her own MySpace password makes it okay. ?You can monitor everything that way.

The computer is also okay in my opinion, too, as long as it's not like she's on it whenever she wants on the internet doing whatever she wants to do. ?I'm sure she's not since you seem in control of the situation.

My 12 year old nephew has a computer in his bedroom with internet access. ?While I think 12 is a fine age to have a computer and be on the internet, his mom (my SIL) is completely clueless about computer AND the internet. ?(Anytime she wants to order something, etc., she gets me or DH to do it.) ?Therefore, there are no controls or limits on what he can do. ?He told DH and me the other day about some chat room he was going to, and we talked to him about being safe...but he can still do whatever her wants on it whenever and his mom would never know...that's when it's stupid in my opinion!?

It's ok... Honestly she hasn't touched the myspace more than 3 times since she got it.  All of our cousins signed up their kids and our kids got jealous so we signed up too... and that was about it.

She needs to type papers for school and her gifted and talented class requires online work.
