Overweight and Ultrasounds?

Question for anyone who is overweight and preferably has kids already... I need to call and book my first ultrasound tomorrow and I've been given an 11-13 week time frame to have it done in. A friend told me that it can be harder to see the heartbeat early on for those of us that are overweight. Does anyone have any experience with that? I was going to wait until 13 weeks just in case, but I'd rather go sooner for peace of mind.

Re: Overweight and Ultrasounds?

  • I'm not sure, but I do know that the earlier ultrasounds are done vaginally, so that might make it easier to see things? They move to outside your stomach when you are further along.

  • I was overweight last pregnancy, and had no problems with any of my ultrasounds. The first one was done vaginally for the majority of the u/s, but like PP said, that's pretty standard for early in pregnancy. I had about 6 u/s and never had any problems at all. Don't worry. :)

  • I can't see how there would be a problem, ultrasound works by finding boundaries (changes in density), it isn't impeded by a thinner or thicker first layer.

also I've had an ultrasound at I think it was just under six weeks (last preg) and it was just abdominal, and they found all they needed to find.
  • They use quite a bit of pressure when giving the u/s so there's no problem seeing anything.
