Acid Reflux

OMG Acid reflux is so flipping painful. Tonight it is so bad, it's hard for me to concentrate. Any home remedies or suggestions? I feel like it is burning a hole through my chest and throat!!!

Try Maalox, the liquid kind. It tastes very strongly of peppermint and is thick, but it works very well. My OB okay'd it, but you might ask yours just to be sure. On top of that getting rid of things in your diet that make it worse can help more than treating it sometimes. Like if carbonated beverages set you off, or tomato sauce, or spicy foods, etc., then you might want to just avoid those foods for now. I hope it gets better for you soon! Any kind of reflux sucks!

ETA: Also don't eat before bed for at least 2 hours. Eating before laying down can make reflux so much worse!

  • I've had to take otc zantac a couple of times, otherwise I'm popping tums like candy. I hate it. I've used raw almonds with some success in my last pregnancy but it's not helping this time.
  • For me, I did have to take zantac during my last. But for this one, if I drink some milk before I go to bed, I don't have the heartburn nearly as bad. It coats it. Good luck, I know it can be so painful.

  • My mom suggested pickle juice to me the other day. She read that a tablespoon will help. Don't know if that's true or not though..

  • Yup, I'm up at 2am because of reflux (and back pain and insomnia). Fun times! I'm definitely going to look into Zantac. I've had heartburn/reflux before pregnancy but have always been able to get rid of it with a few tums.
  • Reflux is the worst. Try Tums Extra Strength. I pretty much lived off a Costco sized bottle the last couple of weeks when I was pregnant with DS. Try not to sleep laying down all the way. Try to keep yourself propped up, that might help as well.

  • I had a terrible time with it. I mentioned it my ob and he gave me a prescription for Prilosec. Life changing. Haven't had one issue since.
  • I eat tums to try and ward it off at night. As a bonus it is more calcium!
  • I had the same problem with DS. I popped tums like candy. All it got we was a giant kidney stone. Ended up in the ER when DS was 3 weeks old. I'm looking for alternatives :(

I wouldn't do pickle juice due to the high salt content, but apple cider vinegar is a home remedy if you can stomach it. I've never tried personally, but a friend has and said it worked for her.

  • Unfiltered apple cider vinegar works. I can't shoot it straight, so I put it in hot water with honey. It's like a funny tasting tea. It also has a ton of other benefits!
  • Doing Zantac and it is definitely helping. Also in the last couple weeks I noticed I am now lactose.....  :((  I need to get some tums as well to have on hand! I've been scared to eat honey since no bottles say pasteurized.... I love honey too!!!! Thanks ladies for all your suggestions!! It is greatly appreciated!

  • I haven't struggled with it too badly this pregnancy yet but it's still early. But both of my prior pregnancies it was so bad that nothing I did, ate, or drank stopped it. My first pregnancy I was given a prescription, and my second pregnancy my OB told me that the prescription is the exact same thing as Zantac and it was perfectly fine to take a Zantac a day to keep it under control. Anyways, Sometimes the Zantac didn't even touch it, but at least you know the option is there and safe if you end up desperate enough to go that route!

  • Hello all. I have lurking, but just had to respond. Glad to hear there are some OTC possibilities. I've had heartburn after tomato sauce and spicy foods for years, but now it's really bad. Worst case the other day after eating cucumbers! Luckily an ice cold glass of milk is working still, but it is getting stronger!
  • I am having acid reflux/heartburn at night and have been drinking a glass of milk before bed and it's helping. I really don't love milk but hey if it works I'll keep doing it.
  • I take papaya extract and it works immediately. You can buy it at a health food store, but make sure you ask your doctor first. I have wicked hb just like my first pregnancy and take it every night.
  • I have been on Zantac and tums. Yogurt seems to help too
  • Had anyone had acid reflux that left a lump feeling in your throat
